State Troopers administered Narcan to overdose victim Saturday in Griswold

Griswold — State police Saturday administered an emergency dose of Intranasal Naloxone, also known as Narcan, to an unresponsive man who was found sitting in a car in the rear of the Jewett City Pharmacy on Main Street.

Troopers First Class Kevin Moore and Darwin Garnett were dispatched to the area at 3:21 p.m., where they found the unidentified man unconscious with labored breathing. Police said the man also had a shallow pulse, pinpoint pupils and was not responding to stimuli.

The troopers also found an empty plastic bag on his lap.

Using his training on learning the signs of an opioid overdose, Moore retrieved his Narcan dispenser and administered it.  Garnett used the sternum rub to stimulate the man.

Police said the man became conscious and was taken to the William W. Backus Hospital for further treatment.

This is at least the third time that troopers from Troop E in Montville have given Narcan to an apparent overdose victim since the administration of the medication by police was legalized on Oct. 1. All of the incidents happened in Griswold.

In late October, Trooper Steven Gardner was the first trooper in the state to administer the drug.

Gardner gave the drug to an unresponsive 40-year-old man, a suspected overdose victim. The man responded immediately to the dose and became conscious.

Last month, Trooper First Class Kevin Miller and Trooper Nicholas Crugnale were dispatched to the area of 29 Geer Road, where they found an unresponsive 35-year-old woman sitting in a car. The woman was revived after Crugnale administered Narcan.
