Fifteen hurt in 22-car Gold Star Memorial Bridge pileup

Icy conditions caused the 22-car pileup on I-95 South this morning.

New London — Fifteen people were injured, two of them seriously, Sunday morning in a 22-car accident that began on a ramp exiting the Gold Star Memorial Bridge, according to a city fire official.

None of the injuries appeared life-threatening, according to New London Fire Battalion Chief Marc Melanson, and ranged from serious to more minor wounds. The victims’ names and ages were not immediately available, but some children were among the injured, Melanson said.

The victims were sent to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and its Pequot Medical Center in Groton.

The accident was reported about 9:15 a.m., and stretched from the southbound ramp of I-95 that exits to Williams Street, and back on to the Gold Star Bridge, Melanson said.

There were reports of ice quickly forming on roads and sidewalks throughout the region Sunday morning.

“That was right when the ice hit,” Melanson said. “We started getting calls for people falling, and then car accidents, and then while we were out, we were directed toward this accident.” One fire engine company responding from Broad Street pulled out of the station and slid down the apron, he said.

New London Fire Department’s three stations responded, along with paramedics from Lawrence + Memorial. Ambulances from Groton, Waterford, Mystic and the Submarine Base Fire Department also assisted at the scene. Ambulances made a couple of return trips to the scene, Melanson said.

Connecticut State Police shut the ramp to motorists, and then directed emergency equipment up the wrong way to reach the accident.

“The entire scene was assessed for medical issues,” Melanson said. “There was a variety of oil spills, fuel and fluids in general that had to be addressed also.”

Connecticut State Police are investigating but had no information on the crashes Sunday.

“Obviously there must have been some type of domino effect,” Melanson said. “You don’t normally come around the corner and see 22 vehicles all over the place.”

L+M spokesman Michael O’Farrell said Sunday that up to 23 people were brought to the two facilities for injuries in ice-related incidents.

With ice in the forecast, he said hospital emergency services personnel had already discussed how to handle a possible influx of victims on Sunday and were prepared to do so.

“Plans were in place in case it got to a serious level but it never did because most of the injuries were minor and people could be quickly evaluated,” said.

State police said they responded to and investigated 216 storm-related crashes, 28 of which caused injury on Sunday throughout the state. State troopers responded to more than 800 calls for police service to include spinouts, disabled vehicles and other requests.
