Malloy declares state of emergency, issues travel ban

Hartford - Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has declared a State of Emergency in preparation for the coming blizzard, which is anticipated to heavily impact the state tonight through Tuesday.

Malloy has also issued a travel ban for all roads starting at 9 p.m. tonight.

“People need to take this storm seriously,” said Malloy said in a statement. “If current predictions are accurate, we will need people to stay off the roads so that emergency personnel and utility crews can get to the places they need to get to, and to make sure that our plows can keep critical roadways clear.”

Kevin Nursick, state Department of Transportation spokesman, said the state fleet of 632 plow trucks are ready for the storm, including 200 additional contractors.

He said crews will come in a couple hours before the storm's arrival and work for 48 hours straight.

“This is no joke,” said Nursick. “People need to stay off the roads so we can do our jobs effectively.”

Nursick said the DOT has 50 satellite locations around the state with salt and fuel so that trucks can restock no matter where they are in the state.

He also said the DOT has 12 industrial loaders that are mounted with snow blowers that can remove 1,500 tons of snow an hour.

“There really is no reason for anyone to be on the roads,” said Nursick.
