    Don't manipulate or silence students

I recently read the letter, "Protest by students shows education bias," (March 8), regarding the die-in at Fitch High. I am left wondering what an unbiased education would look like. Students have opinions, and they should be able to express them. Just by watching news on the TV or flipping through the newspaper, you'll find shootings based on race.

Growing up in our society also influences your opinions greatly. If you know that riots are happening in the next town over because of a shooting, you will grow up knowing that your opinions matter and that you should express yourself in a civil way.

Recently, Texas changed their curriculum so Republican philosophies and thoughts were put in a more positive light and now history and economics textbooks are getting the conservative stamp. Texas is literally rewriting history.

Don McLeroy, leader of the conservative faction on the Texas Board of Education, stated "We are adding balance" (NY Times). Is this what an unbiased education should look like?

On Dec. 15, 1791, the U.S. adopted the First Amendment allowing people to peacefully assemble and granting freedom of speech. Should this right only apply to adults? Shouldn't our youth have this right as well?
