    Spring training baseball

    Athletics 8, Reds 1

Groton's Jesse Hahn threw five shutout innings, Brett Lawrie hit a three-run homer and Oakland beat Cincinnati in spring training on Saturday at Mesa, Ariz.

Hahn, the former Fitch High School standout, gave up four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Lawrie also made a great play at third in the fourth, preventing a run.

"That pumped me up," said Hahn. "That turned everything around for me. He's a guy who can save you a lot of runs over the course of a season."

Hahn said everything was working exactly the way he wanted, calling it a "great outing." He got ahead of hitters and was able to use his curve to his advantage.

"My arm feels strong and all my pitches are coming along," Hahn said. "I said I wanted to mostly work on the change. I threw five of them and was pleased."

    Tigers 6, Mets 4

A day after being named the Tigers' opening day starter, David Price struggled, allowing eight hits and two runs in 4 1-3 innings of Detroit's win over the New York Mets.

Price also walked a batter, but struck out seven and stranded seven baserunners. He has a 4.38 ERA in four starts this spring for the Tigers.

Mets top lefty prospect Steven Matz allowed one run in 2 2-3 innings in his second start of the spring.

J.D. Martinez hit his fourth home run for the Tigers and New London's Rajah Davis and Alex Avila had two hits.

Juan Lagares and John Mayberry, Jr., each had two hits for the Mets. Lagares raised his spring average to .394 with his two doubles, and Mayberry lifted his to .452.

    Yankees 3, Astros 2

Michael Pineda gave up a first inning two-run homer to Chris Carter before settling down to strike out six while pitching into the fourth inning, and New York rallied in the ninth to beat Houston.

Slade Heathcott scored the winning run on Jake Cave's sacrifice fly. Eddy Rodriguez tied the game with a two-run double off Astros reliever Will Harris and advanced to third on a throwing error by Andrew Aplin to set up the winning run.

Yankees relievers Justin Wilson, Andrew Miller, Andrew Bailey, Nick Rumbelow and Jacob Lindgren gave up just one hit and struck out eight over the final 5 1-3 innings. Mark Teixeria had two hits for the Yankees.

Red Sox 2, Pirates 2, tie

Francisco Liriano struck out six in four scoreless innings and Starling Marte had two hits in Pittsburgh's tie with Boston.

Pirates pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts. Liriano scattered two hits and three walks. Boston's Wade Miley struck out five and allowed two hits in five scoreless innings.

In the fifth, Boston's Rusney Castillo tripled off the right-field wall and Allen Craig's single drove him in.

Trailing 2-1 in the ninth, Boston speedster Quintin Berry reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a groundout and scored on Blake Tekotte's two-out single to right field.
