Malloy gets an earful from Ledyard residents

Tina Carrington, right, a Gales Ferry resident who lives on Fawn Dr., expresses her frustration regarding the lack of service to her neighborhood and Ledyard from Connecticut Light & Power to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, left, as the governor answered questions from local residents on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 outside Ledyard Town Hall about the restoration of power following the damage of Tropical Storm Irene.

Ledyard - Governor Dannel P. Malloy began his visit to Ledyard with an impromptu question and answer session with local residents and reporters in the parking lot adjacent to the Ledyard Town Hall.

Residents expressed their frustrations with the length of time it is taking for Connecticut Light & Power to restore power to their businesses and homes in Ledyard, Gales Ferry, and surrounding areas. Several residents voiced concerns over the lack of a CL&P presence, stating that no CL&P trucks or crews had been seen in their neighborhoods or towns. At least one person provided contrary testimony, stating that a CL&P truck had been spotted.

Following the session outside, Gov. Malloy entered the town hall, which is without electricity. The town hall continues to run some electrical devices with power from an old generator.

The governor had a couple of closed door meetings as reporters and residents were kept outside the building. Steve Masalin, the public works director for Ledyard, met with Gov. Malloy and showed him a map detailing the problem areas in Ledyard. After Masalin left the building he spoke to reporters and residents while Malloy met with additional officials.

Masalin stated that he and the governor agreed that there was no need for a tour of the town as the governor already understood the scope of the problem. Masalin fielded questions from residents and displayed the same map he had shown to Gov. Malloy. Referring to CL&P's outage update link on the company's website, Masalin said progress in restoring power to the area is being made and some homes that had lost power now have electricity.

Gov. Malloy departed for Hartford after concluding meetings in the town hall.
