    Local colleges: CGA men earn program's first NEWMAC lacrosse win

    New London — Coast Guard Academy earned its first conference win in program history by defeating Emerson 18-4 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's lacrosse match Saturday.

    Pat Dreiss scored a game-high three goals for the Bears (3-9, 1-4), who scored the game's first four goals, while Robert McKenna, Justin Huemme and Ryan Guinee each had two goals and an assist, Blaise Curtis and Alec Groff scored two goals apiece and Matt Huemme added a goal and three assists.

    Emerson is 5-9, 0-5.

    In other matches:

    • Ross Thompson scored five goals as Connecticut College scored the game's final four goals to rally past Hamilton College 10-7 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Camels (3-11, 1-8) snapped a five-game losing streak to win their first conference game of the year. Goalie Bobby Bleisten mad 10 saves while Briggs Barton added his 29th goal of the season.

    • Mitchell College outscored Regis 7-2 in the second half to rally for a 13-9 win in the New England Collegiate Conference. Dan DiGioia and Tyler Kradas scored four goals each for the Mariners (5-7, 3-0).

    Women's lacrosse

    • Margaret Gabriel scored four goals as No. 7 Hamilton defeated Conn College 12-6 in the NESCAC. Meag Irvine and Heidi Halsted scored two goals apiece for the Camels (4-10, 1-8) and goalie Meg Raskin made seven saves.

    • Kaitlin Dickson had two goals and an assist during Coast Guard's 16-10 loss to Smith in the NEWMAC. Holly Moore, Niki Kruger and Cecelia Hosley added two goals apiece for the Bears (3-11, 0-7) while Ruby Surgent finished with one goal and one assist.

    Baseball

    • Avery Santos' pinch-hit homer won the opener as Avery Point swept Monroe College, winning the opener 6-5 and the second game 4-3. The Pointers trailed 5-3 entering the bottom of the seventh in the opener when Nick Perrelli walked, Izzy Davila singled and Santos hit the first pitch er saw for a three-run homer.

    Pete Aldrich earned the win in relief of starter Doug Domnarski and Davila had two hits. Bryant Morander (4-0) won the second game, but John Russell got him out of trouble in the sixth inning and earned his third save. Russell's six-out save included four strikeouts. Andrew Hinckley had two hits and drove in two runs and Jordan Kowalski's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning broke a 3-3 tie for Avery Point (20-8).

    • Vinny Siena drove in two runs with a fourth inning single that gave UConn a lead it would never relinquish in a 7-3 victory over East Carolina in the American Athletic Conference. Bobby Melley added two hits and two RBI for the Huskies (25-14, 6-5), who evened their three-game weekend series against the Pirates (23-16, 5-6) at 1-1 with the final game scheduled for today at 1 p.m. in Storrs. Anthony Kay (6-3) went 7.1 innings to earn the win.

    • Coast Guard settled for a split and won the three-game weekend NEWMAC series with Clark, capturing the opener 10-6 before falling in the second game 7-1. The Bears (14-11, 7-9) can earn a conference tournament bid by defeating Emerson on Monday and forcing Clark to win three of its final four games. Mark Behne (three hits) hit his first career home run, a two-run shot, in the opener for Coast Guard, Tim Duncan tied a single-season record with his sixth homer of the spring and Eric Vrissis pitched 3.2 innings of hitless relief to earn the win.

    • Rafael Garcia went 4-for-6 with four doubles and five RBI on the day as Mitchell swept Lesley 7-1 and 15-5 in the NECC. Waterford's Gavin LaLima added five hits for the Mariners (19-3, 10-1) while Neftali Arroyo was 4-for-6 with a home, double, three RBI and four runs. Fitch's Al Jordan Johnson and Tyler Shamas were Mitchell's winning pitchers, each improving to 5-0.

    Softball

    • Smith rallied from a 5-1 deficit for a 6-5 win in game two to complete a sweep and hamper Coast Guard's chances at earning a spot in next week's NEWMAC tournament. Smith (10-16, 5-11) won the opener 7-0. The Bears (14-16, 5-11) must sweep Wellesley on Friday and get help to qualify for the postseason. Freshman Emma Hvozdovich hit a two-run homer as part of a four-run fourth the second game for Coast Guard while Jessie Richardson and Cherokee Strickland had two hits apiece. Strickland also doubled in the opener.

    • Mitchell suffered its first two NECC losses of the season, dropping a doubleheader to Newbury 3-0 and 2-1 in Brookline, Mass. Olivia Kenyon was the winning pitcher in both games for Newbury (11-11, 6-6), allowing only seven hits in the two games. Mitchell is 11-13, 10-2.

    Men's tennis

    • Coast Guard did not drop a set in beating Emerson 9-0 in a NEWMAC match played a Harvard. The top two doubles teams of Mark Guentert-Weston Fortna and Robert Renfrow-Michael Melampy did not lose a game for the Bears (7-6, 3-2) while Melampy (No. 4 singles) and Benson Errington (No. 6 singles) each won 6-0, 6-0.

    • Mitchell snapped a three-match losing streak with a 9-0 win over Wheelock in the NECC. The highlight for the Mariners came at No. 1 singles where Adam Diaz rallied for a 7-5, 6-2, 10-7 win. Orson Sinclair, Michael Berman, Michael Edwards, Chris McKeon and Zach Rocheleau were all straight set winners Mitchell.

    • Conn College lost to No. 30 Tufts 8-1, picking up its lone win from Jonathan Kraiger at No. 3 singles, who rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory. The Camels are 7-9, 0-6.
