    Mariners riding a wave

    • Mitchell College, which qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament for the second straight season, placed three players on the D3baseball.com All-New England team. Fitch High School graduate Al Jordan Johnson, a junior pitcher, made the first team after setting a program single-season record for wins. He posted a 10-1 record with career-low 2.58 earned run average and earned New England College Conference pitcher of the year.

    Senior outfielder Kenneth Olszewski and junior pitcher Tyler Shamas landed on the third team. Olszewski, a Griswold graduate, batted a team-high .399 in 39 games and finished with 12 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 32 RBI. He finished his career fourth on the school's all-time hit list with 146 in three seasons and set a program single season record with 59 hits this spring. Shamas had a 7-2 record with a 2.59 earned run average and became the program's all-time winningest pitcher with 23 career victories.

    • The following Connecticut College athletes made the New England Small College Athletic Conference spring all-sportsmanship team: sophomore John Cunningham (lacrosse), sophomore Haley Crimmins (lacrosse), senior Mike Clougher (rowing), senior Sarah Fishman (rowing), junior Jonathan Kraiger (tennis), sophomore Jillian Brigandi (tennis), senior Patrick Dermody (track and field), and junior Emily Winter (track and field).

    Tracking the Bears

    • Coast Guard Academy senior Beth Gollin will compete in the NCAA Division III track and field championships, starting Thursday at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. She qualified in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 2.57 seconds.

    Around the region

    The College of New Jersey defender Elizabeth Morrison capped an outstanding freshman year by being named an Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-American. Morrison, a former Stonington High School standout, was named to the first team after leading the Lions in ground balls (70) and caused turnovers (40). She also collected 65 draw controls. She helped the seventh-ranked Lions (18-4) reach the NCAA Division III tournament quarterfinals where they lost to top-ranked Trinity 10-5 on Sunday.

    • Rhode Island College senior outfielder Pat Rogers of Waterford was named to the Little East Conference first team. Rogers started all 32 games, batting .379 with 10 doubles, five home runs and 34 RBI for the Anchormen (21-13). Rogers, who played baseball at UConn-Avery Point, graduated with a degree in Health Care Management.

    • Albertus Magnus College sophomore defender Tucker Johns of Montville recently received the 2015 Falcon Award for men's lacrosse during the school's annual athletics banquet on May 5. Tucker graduated from Norwich Tech.

    • Bryant University senior Brooke Tomasetti of Waterford ran the second fastest time in school history in the 800 at the New England Championships. She crossed the line in two minutes, 16.74 seconds.

    • Mercy College freshman Morgan Lloyd of East Lyme was selected to the East Coast Conference softball first team. Lloyd batted .374 with 16 RBI, 17 runs scored, six doubles and one home run in 42 starts. Lloyd also received rookie of the week honors from the ECC and ECAC late last month. She finished with multiple hits in four of her last seven games.

    • North Stonington's Conor Gleason was a valuable member of nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce University baseball team. Gleason, a senior right-hander, went 3-0 with a 3.82 earned run average, striking out 47 in 35.1 innings. The Ravens (48-4) hosted the NCAA Div. II East Regional and lost to Wilmington (Del.) 5-3 in the semifinals.

    • Senior shortstop Brianna Turgeon capped her career in style, helping the Fordham softball team capture its third straight Atlantic 10 tournament championship and make it all the way to the NCAA Harrisonburg (Va.) Regional final. The Rams were eliminated from the NCAA tournament with a 2-1 loss to North Carolina State. Turgeon, a Fitch graduate, finished the season with a .252 batting average. She had five home runs and 21 RBI in 51 games, including 45 starts.

    Shatajah Wattley, a sophomore from Montville, was named the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University female athlete of the week. Wattley led the Owls to the program's first New England Championship last weekend. She placed second in the 100 (11.77) and 200 (23.68) and also ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team and runner-up 4x100 relay team. Wattely will be competing in the NCAA Division II Championships later this week in Allendale, Mich. She qualified in the 100, 200 and 4x400.

    • UConn right-hander Carson Cross was selected as the American Athletic Conference pitcher of the year. The Huskies placed a league-best seven players on the all-conference teams. Cross was an unanimous first team pick. He owns a 10-2 record with a 2.18 earned run average. He ranks first in the conference in innings pitched (99), strikeouts (106) and batting average against at .206.

    UConn pitcher Anthony Kay, outfielder Blake Davey and second baseman Vinny Siena also made the first team while catcher Max McDowell, outfielder Jack Sundberg and third baseman Willy Yan were second team picks. The Huskies are seeded sixth in the American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship field. They begin tournament play Wednesday against third-seeded Tulane at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla.

    • Two former Eastern Connecticut Conference standouts will be playing in the Northeast Conference baseball tournament at Dodd Stadium in Norwich this week. Nolan Long of Waterford is a starting pitcher for Wagner. He's 4-2 with a 2.74 earned run average in nine starts, leading the team with 53 strikeouts in 46 innings. Norwich Free Academy graduate Joseph Paparelli, a sophomore outfielder, is batting .286 with one home run and 12 RBI in 30 games for Bryant. elimination tournament begins on Thursday and runs through Sunday. Defending champion Bryant plays Fairleigh Dickinson at noon while Wagner faces Sacred Heart at 4 p.m.
