    Schooners fall to Muskrats

    Groton — Tre Gonzalez pitched six strong innings for Mystic on Wednesday night, but the Schooners lost to the Laconia Muskrats 5-2 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Fitch High School.

    Gonzalez, the former Montville High School standout who plays at Eastern Connecticut State, allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) over six innings with six strikeouts and no walks. He left trailing 2-1, but was taken off the hook when the Schooners (10-5) tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth.

    Jesse Berardi (St. John's) scored on an error to tie the game. Mystic got its first run in the third, when Dan Hoy (Princeton) singled home Derek Jenkins (Seton Hall). Hoy was 2-for-3.

    New York-Penn League

    • Junior Valera went 4-for-5, including a double, with three RBI and two runs as the Staten Island Yankees downed the Connecticut Tigers, 12-7, in a New York-Penn League game at Dodd Stadium. It was the first game of a doubleheader.

    Ryan Krill hit a three-run home run for the Yankees (3-2) and Griffin Gordon had two hits, including a two-run single, and scored.

    Ignacio Valdez had two hits, including a solo home run, with three runs and two RBI for the Tigers (1-4), who stranded 15 runners. Arvicent Perez added two hits and scored.

    Zone VI Junior Legion

    • Lucas Sousa-Ross scored three times and Camden Hausberger drove in three runs as Niantic beat Jewett City 9-3. Matt Malcolm, Jared Hunt, Sousa-Ross and Hausberger had two hits each for Niantic and Hunt was the winning pitcher. Will Luzi pitched three scoreless innings in relief for Niantic.

    District 10 Softball (11-12)

    • Rachel Miller pitched a one-hitter and had two hits as Waterford beat New London 18-0 in four innings. Miller struck out seven. Anna Guido, Madison Nott and Molly Quiles also had two hits each for Waterford and Jaclyn Potter had a double for New London.

    ECML

    • Three Rivers scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning and beat Johnny Rockets 6-3 in an Eastern Connecticut Major League game. Saxon Herbert was the winning pitcher, had two hits and drove in two runs. Jacob Jimenez (two RBI) and Devon Lee had two hits each for Three Rivers. Alex Tuneski had three hits and drove in two runs and Ed Lorah and Dave Hall had two hits each for Johnny Rockets.

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • Lucas Bazzano had three hits, scored twice and was the winning pitcher as Tri-County beat East Lyme 12-2 in the season opener for both teams. Bazzano allowed three hits and struck out seven over four scoreless innings. Zach Hyde had a three-run double in a four-run first inning for Tri-County.
