UConn men land prize point guard

UConn celebrated its Fourth of July with some recruiting fireworks.

The men's basketball program received a commitment from prize point guard Alterique Gilbert of Lithonia, Georgia.

Gilbert, a member of the Class of 2016 and top 40 recruit, announced his decision on his Twitter account on Saturday.

"Blessed beyond measure to have the opportunity to play college basketball. I've decided to end my recruitment and Commit to UCONN!"

According to multiple reports, Gilbert chose UConn over Louisville, Texas, Illinois and Syracuse because of his relationship with coach Kevin Ollie and UConn's reputation for developing point guards. He made just one official visit, traveling to Storrs in April.

"I watched their previous guys like (Ryan) Boatright, Kemba (Walker) and Shabazz (Napier) and that's definitely my style of play," Gilbert told Scout.com. "I can relate to those guys being a smaller guard and being able to see them be successful helps."

The explosive Gilbert, who checks in at 6-feet, 170 pounds, averaged 18.5 points, 6.2 assists, 5.3 steals and 4.7 rebounds last season at Miller Grove High School. He's been on two state championship teams.

UConn now has three members in its 2016 recruiting class. Gilbert joins 6-8 forward Mamadou Diarra of Putnam Science Academy and Virginia Commonwealth University transfer Terry Larrier, who'll sit out this season at UConn.
