    Local roundup: Gibson accounts for tying, winning runs in Tigers victory

    Batavia, N.Y. — Cam Gibson walked and scored on an error in the top of the eighth inning as the Connecticut Tigers held off the Batavia Muckdogs for a 7-6 victory in a New York-Penn League game at Dwyer Stadium.

    Gibson drew a two-out walk and stole second before scoring on a throwing error. Gibson, the Tigers' designated hitter, added a solo homer in the sixth and finished 2-for-4. A.J. Simcox and Tanner Donnels added two hits each.

    The Tigers (15-16) scored three runs in the first inning, getting an RBI single by Corey Baptist, a sacrifice fly by Donnels and an RBI single by Steven Fuentes. Connecticut led 5-0 before Batavia (9-22) scored once in the third and five in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. The Tigers tied it on Gibson's homer  before scoring the go-ahead run in the eighth.

    Drew Smith (2-0) pitched three innings in relief of starter Sandy Baez to earn the victory and Jake Shull picked up his third save. The Tigers have won three straight.

    The teams will play again tonight at Batavia beginning at 7:05 p.m.

    NECBL

    • Ryan Baldwin (Barry University) led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run and Justin Thomas (Quinnipiac) allowed just five hits over seven innings with three strikeouts to earn the win as the New Bedford Bay Sox edged the Mystic Schooners 1-0. Jon Escobar (Holy Cross) allowed just one hit in one inning of work with a strikeout to earn the save for the Bay Sox (17-18). Richard Slenker (Yale) had two hits, including a double, for the Schooners (20-15) and Nick Mascelli (Wagner) added two hits.

    American Legion

    • Trevor Bolduc’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning drove home Justin Marceau for the go-ahead run as fourth-seeded New London beat No. 5 Tolland 4-3, in the first game of their best-of-three Northern Division third-round series. Hunter Nadeau pitched a seven-hitter with five strikeouts for New London and Pieter Khoury had three hits, including a double, and two RBI. Also, Jeremy Santos scored twice and Marceau had two hits. Game 2 is today at Sal Amanti Field (3 p.m.) Game 3 follows if nescessary.

    State Div. 3 LL baseball (11-12)

    • Jared Burrows hit a double and home run and Ben Jerome added two hits, including a double, as Waterford edged Madison 12-11. Trey Brennan hit a home run for Waterford and Mike Marelli, Robert Zawacki, Ryan Bakken, Luke Sokolski and Ryan O’Connell all doubled.

    State Div. 4 LL baseball (11-12)

    • Norwich beat Mansfield 9-2 in the tournament opener. John Padilla and Drew Willson led off the fifth inning with singles to set the table for Connor Ullrich's two-run single to break a scoreless tie. Norwich broke the game open in the sixth with a two-run homer by Griffin Pontbriant. Brian Miskiewicz lead Norwich with four RBI. Norwich plays Ellington at 6 tonight in Windsor Locks.

    State Div. 3 LL baseball (9-10)

    • West Hartford beat Waterford 4-3 in the opening game of pool play. Evan McCue had three hits and Sean O’Connell added two hits for Waterford, which plays Cromwell tonight at Adams School in Guilford (5:30).

    Sutera Tournament (9-10) 

    • Gavin O'Brien hit for the cycle and Chris Stevens, Nathan O'Neil, Ethan Moore and Connor Moran each had two hits as East Lyme topped Norwich 14-1. O'Neil was also the winning pitcher.

    • Joshua Knight's double in extra innings knocked in the winning runs as Ledyard defeated Groton 6-4. Brayden Wuestner struck out seven and Derek Kennedy hit a double for Ledyard. Nathan Virtue hit a double and Lucas Ursini made two run-saving catches for Groton.

    Sutera Tournament (11-12)

    • Owen Robbins and Logan Rolfe each hit three-run homers as East Lyme beat Mystic 7-2. Alex Fraser had three hits, including a double, and Daniel Allard had two singles for East Lyme. Cam McGugan hit a home run and Ramiro Zavala had two hits for Mystic.

    • Colbe Andrews and Conner Wyman hit solo home runs in the bottom of the sixth and Brady Sheffield hit a game-winning single in the seventh as Lyme/Old Lyme nipped Waterford 3-2. Jack Carney was the winning pitcher in relief and Owen Coderre, Connor Crump and AJ Sachatello had two hits each for Waterford.
