    Local roundup: Coast Guard opens volleyball season with win over Mitchell

    New London — Coast Guard Academy made a winner of Mike Bynon in his coaching debut as the Bears rolled to a 25-16, 25-10, 25-10 volleyball victory over Mitchell College on Tuesday night in the season opener for both schools.

    Coast Guard is 7-0 all-time against the Mariners.

    Senior Ashley Dumont led the Bears with seven kills while junior Susan West and freshman Stephanie Bullard each added five kills. Senior Emily Gilland led the Coast Guard with 11 digs while sophomore Madison Scott had a team-high five blocks.

    Senior Amanda Garcia had a match-high 10 kills while classmate Kaisea Caramante of Old Lyme led the way with 11 digs for Mitchell. 

    Men's soccer

    • Michael Skarbelis scored three goals in the first half to lead New England College past Mitchell 4-0 in the season opener for both schools. The Pilgrims held a 21-4 edge in shots with Mitchell goalie Anthony Drake making seven saves and two others each stopping one shot.

    • Western Connecticut spoiled Coast Guard's season opener, scoring twice in the second half to beat the Bears 2-0. Coast Guard held a 14-10 edge in shorts and goalie Jake Sorenson of Montville made three saves.

    Women's soccer

    • Junior Terry Netusil had two goals and an assist while senior Sarah Mills scored twice to lead Coast Guard to a 6-1 win over Anna Maria in the season opener. It marked the third straight season the Bears have opened with a win. Coast Guard also picked up goals from a pair of freshmen — Olivia Holt and Elley Donnelly.

    • New England College scored all of its goals in the second half to spoil Mitchell's season opener 3-0. Goalie Katie McBride made 12 saves for the Mariners, who were outshot 28-0. 

    Zone VI Legion baseball

    • New London third baseman Justin Marceau was named Most Valuable Player for the 2015 American Legion Zone VI baseball season while Waterford's Connor Lewis was voted the Outstanding Pitcher and New London's Tom Vivirito was named Manager of the Year.

    First team all-stars selected were catcher Austin Toback (Niantic), first baseman Ryan Francis (Ledyard/Pawcatuck), middle infielders Troy Stefanski (L/P) and Cooper Robinson (New London), third baseman Marceau, outfielders Mike Morgan (Niantic), Jeremy Santos (New London) and Tannor Fontaine (Jewett City), pitchers Lewis, Hunter Nadeau (New London) and Nic Vlaun (Jewett City) and utility player Chance Gendron (Norwich).

    The reserves were catcher Koby Reggione (Danielson), infielders Pieter Khoury (New London) and Brandon Drabinski (Jewett City), outfielder Josh Allard (TriTown) and pitchers Mike Esposito (Moosup) and Jack Livingston (Niantic) while sportsmanship awards went to Dylan Clarkin (Danielson), Trent Appleton (Jewett City), Kevin Knowles (L/P), Mike Esposito (Moosup), Timmie Jackson (New London), Sam Gonski (Niantic), Josh Gurnack (Norwich), J.P. Bergeron (TriTown), Thomas Sutera (Waterford) and Dakota Fleming (Willimantic).
