Chief: Firefighters knock down fast-moving Ledyard brush fire

Ledyard — No injuries were reported as a result of a fast-moving brush fire first reported around 4 p.m. Saturday at 1906 Center Groton Road.

Upon arrival, firefighters found "a rapidly growing, wind driven brush fire in a remote and difficult to reach area of the woods, approximately a half mile off of the road," Ledyard Fire Chief John Doucette said by email.

The location of the fire made it difficult for fire apparatus to quickly reach the scene, Doucette said.

High winds and extremely dry conditions required Ledyard to request assistance from other fire departments, including Gales Ferry Fire Company, Old Mystic Fire Department, North Stonington Fire Department and Center Groton Fire Department.

"In steep terrain, Firefighters aggressively fought to control the leading edge of the fire before the wind could further expand the fire's growth, preventing the fire from impinging on a barn and other structures," Doucette said.

The fire was under control in about one hour.
