H.S. roundup: Montville wrestlers capture Doc Meyers Invite title
Stafford — Montville had eight wrestlers win all five of their matches as it beat Shelton on Saturday, 41-22, in the Doc Meyers Invite final.
The Indians also beat Harding (61-11), Platt Tech-West Haven (72-6), Law (51-9), and Bunnell (61-6).
The wrestlers who won five matches for Montville (23-4) were Noah Caskey (113), Zach Looney (126), Joel Morth (132), Sam Kury (138), Austin Concascia (145), Emanuel Diaz (182), Doug Delacruz (160) and Nick Tibbetts (220).
In other results:
• No. 9 Ledyard went 1-2, losing to host and No. 3 Fairfield Warde 32-28 and No. 8 Bristol Eastern 32-29 while beating Carmel (N.Y.) 43-27. Bo Nguyen (106), Austin Robertson (113), Curtis Patsiga (170), Danny Contino (195), Daric Johnson (220) and Shawn Hundley (285) all went 3-0 for Ledyard (19-4) and Robertson and Contino had two pins each.
• East Lyme went 0-4 at the Hastings Duals in Newington, losing to Masuk (39-21), West Springfield, Mass. (45-15), Hall (51-18) and Maloney (42-30). David Gill was 4-0 with three pins and Greg Stewart was 3-1 with two pins for East Lyme (2-21).
Boys' basketball
• Tyrell Martinez had 12 points and D. Major Roman added 10 points and 14 rebounds as New London beat St. Raphael (R.I.), 44-38. Gio Lopez and Isaiah Cunningham-Hodge both had eight points for New London (7-6).
• Bobby Atkins scored 33 points as Stonington beat Montville 66-58 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division game on Friday night. Atkins made five 3-pointers and went 8-for-10 from the line in the fourth quarter. Amadi White had 12 points and four blocked shots for Stonington (6-6, 3-3). TT Bowens had 28 points and 10 rebounds and Cody Calash scored 18 for Montville (3-9, 0-5).
Girls' basketball
• India Pagan had 10 points and 16 rebounds as No. 3 New London remained undefeated with a 71-33 win over Suffield in a nonleague game. Jada Lucas had 18 points and five assists, Charee Osborne scored 16 points and Kenya Capers had seven rebounds for New London (15-0).
• Waterford lost to Guilford in a nonleague game, 56-52. Vanessa Kobyluck scored 25 points and Shea Spellman had eight rebounds for Waterford (11-3).
Hockey
• Andrew Bannon scored all three of his goals in the third period for NFA-St. Bernard-Bacon-Stonington-Lyman Memorial, which pulled away for a 7-3 win. The Redhawks improved to 5-6. Bryan Guetens also had three goals, Logan Morin added one goal and one assist, and Ben Armor made 22 saves.
Boys' fencing
• Ledyard's Noah Hysong picked up his 100th career win as the Colonels beat New London 9-0 and East Lyme 8-1 in foil. Hysong, a senior, was undefeated and posted a plus 23 on the day. New London beat East Lyme 5-4. In epee, Ledyard beat East Lyme 5-4.
• NFA beat Griswold 6-3 and Bacon 5-4 in epee and split in foil, beating Griswold 9-0 and losing to Bacon 6-3.
Girls' fencing
• Ledyard's Nicole Reinschmidt was plus 15 as the Colonels beat New London (7-2) and East Lyme (6-3) in foil. East Lyme senior Cassie Greeley picked up her 100th career win and the Vikings beat New London 5-4. In epee, Ledyard beat New London 7-2 and East Lyme 6-3 while East Lyme beat New London 5-4. Kissiah Ali of New London was plus 14.
• NFA's Amanda Cilley went 6-0 as the Wildcats beat Griswold 9-0 and lost to Bacon 5-4 in foil. In epee, NFA beat Griswold 7-2 as Olivia Pecoraro and Nicolette Scarpa each went 3-0.
