Ledyard — Police said a 23-year-old Ledyard woman was killed Tuesday night when the car she was driving struck a tree in the area of 43 Iron St. also known as Route 214.

Police said shortly before 9 p.m. they received a 911 call reporting the car accident. When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they found the victim, Jaclyn R. Smith, of 14 Robin Lane, in the car.

A Lifestar helicopter also responded, but Smith was pronounced dead at the scene once she was extricated from the car.

The road was closed for almost two hours as the Ledyard police Accident Investigation Team, along with the Detective Division, investigated the crash.

The Ledyard and Gales Ferry fire departments, the Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Squad and the Center Groton Fire Department also responded to the scene.
