    Local roundup: Avery Point rolls past CCRI 7-1

    Groton — Nick Goglia pitched eight strong innings as Avery Point beat the Community College of Rhode Island 7-1 in a NJCAA Region 21 Division II baseball game on Sunday.

    Goglia (4-2) allowed one run on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks. East Lyme's C.J. Leindecker struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth. Rob Bonacci, Avery Santos and Vinnie Pallisco had two hits each and Santos and Pallisco each scored twice for Avery Point (17-16, 5-3). CCRI drops to 10-9, 4-4. 

    In other games:

    • Mitchell College closed out New England Collegiate Conference play with an 11-4 loss to Lesley. Mitchell, which clinched the top seed in the NECC tournament on Saturday, will host the tournament Friday-Sunday. Chandler Whitney singled and doubled and Jack Finnegan homered for Mitchell (23-9, 13-5).

    • UConn fell to No. 20 East Carolina 3-2 in an American Athletic Conference game. Groton's Aaron Hill scored a run and Stonington's Connor Buckley drove in a run for UConn (21-18, 6-5). 

    Men's tennis

    • Mitchell lost to Albertus Magnus 7-2 in a nonleague match. New London's Orson Sinclair and Michael Berman won singles matches for Mitchell (2-9).

    NECC tournaments

    • Mitchell qualified for the NECC tournament in men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse and softball. The men's lacrosse team is the No. 2 seed and hosts No. 3 Becker in a semifinal on Wednesday at 3 p.m., and the women's lacrosse team is the No. 5 seed and plays at No. 4 Wheelock in a first-round game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The softball team is the No. 5 seed and plays at No. 4 Regis in a first-round game on Tuesday at 4 p.m. 

    H.S. baseball

    • TT Bowens and winning pitcher Jeremy Sagun each scored twice as Montville beat Staples 6-1 in a nonleague game on Saturday. Sagun allowed four hits and no earned runs over 5.2 innings, striking out five with one walk, and Tommy McDonald finished up to earn the save. Seamus Barry, Bowens and Sagun had two hits each for Montville (8-1). 

    H.S. track

    • Ledyard's Herman Winston won the 200 (23.55) and teamed with Eric McCracken, Ryan Lynch and James Smith to win the 4x100 (45.63) at Saturday's Panther Invitational at Plainfield. Collin Wiltshire won the triple jump (42.9.5) for the Colonels and Noah Hysong (pole vault, 11-6), Mychai Sebastian (triple jump, 38-4) and Tannor Daggett (discus, 116-2) each had fifth-place finishes. Also, Josh Snow was sixth in the 3,200 (10:36.66). In the girls' meet, Grace Ladoja was sixth in the shot put (31-1.5).

    Road racing

    • Brendan Tierney of Bolton won the Niantic Bay Boardwalk 5K with a time of 18:26, 10 seconds ahead of Groton's Brian Whitney. Lindsay Dunka of New London was the top women's finisher, coming in 28th with a time of 22:07.

    Also finishing in the top 10 were Chris Merrifield of Niantic, Scott May of Waterford, Christopher Ladyga of Lisbon, John Hadcock of East Lyme, Michael Fleming of New London, Krystian Pawlowski of Glastonbury, Robert Wilkinson of Niantic and Ryan McCauley of Niantic.
