Long Beach's Cegles named deputy AD at UConn

Vic Cegles, director of athletics at Long Beach State since 2006, has accepted the position of deputy athletic director at UConn, the school announced on Friday.

UConn's new athletic director, David Benedict, served un Cegles when he was a senior associate athletic director at Arizona State, and the two will reverse roles in Storrs.

"I am elated that Vic Cegles has made the decision to join the UConn family," Benedict said in a statement released by the university. "Vic has a diverse background and will bring a vast amount of leadership experience in collegiate athletics, including running his own successful athletic department, in addition to serving over 21 years at Power Five institutions. While Vic's focus will be on the external areas of the department, he will be a key member of my leadership team and will be counted on to make many of the day-to-day decisions.

Cegles, a native of Niagara Falls, N.Y., and a 1970 Bucknell graduate, will also serve as the sport administrator in men's basketball, baseball and golf.

"(UConn) is nationally recognized for academic achievement and athletic success," said Cegles, who has also held administrative jobs and Rutgers and Temple. "I look forward to working with their outstanding coaches, staff and student-athletes. I am most appreciative of the opportunity to assist David in managing their aspirations as they pursue national and conference championships and life-changing opportunities."

At Long Beach, Cegles oversaw the school's first capital campaign and raised over $25 million for athletics that supported locker room renovations, stadium scoreboards, videoboards, branding displays, a baseball hitting and training facility and scholarship enhancement. Long Beach teams captured 36 Big West championships, made 70 NCAA postseason appearances under his leadership and have won the conference "Commissioner's Cup" six-consecutive years.

Cegles and his wife Bonnie have two sons: Vic, a former baseball standout at Rutgers, is the director of external relations for athletics at Albany; and Casey, a former wide receiver at Towson University, is the deputy athletic director at Kent State.
