Voluntary furloughs taken by 138 at EB's Rhode Island facility
Late material deliveries have resulted in voluntary furloughs being taken by 138 Electric Boat employees at the company's Quonset Point facility.
The employees will return to work Oct. 17, and are receiving full benefits while on furlough, EB spokesman Tim Boulay said. The group is a mix of hourly and salaried employees, including mainly welders, pipefitters and ship fitters.
"We have plenty of work," Boulay said, noting the delivery issues would not delay submarine deliveries and that the company continues to work "aggressively" with vendors to make sure materials come in on time.
EB's workforce in Connecticut is not impacted by the issue, and no employees here are expected be furloughed as a result.
Currently, 11 nuclear attack submarines are in various phases of construction between EB's facilities in Connecticut and Rhode Island, and Newport News Shipbuilding, which is EB's partner in the Virginia-class program.
