Salve Regina overpowers Coast Guard 48-10

Middletown, R.I. — All you need to know about the Salve Regina defense:

The Seahawks came into Saturday's football game against the Coast Guard Academy having allowed just three rushing yards over 50 carries in their first two games … and actually improved on that.

Salve's Sam Pascale carried 21 times for 226 yards and four touchdowns and the Seahawks allowed the Bears 115 yards, minus-two rushing, in what turned into a rout, quickly. Salve scored on five of its first six possessions and led by 41 points at halftime, en route to a 48-10 victory over Coast Guard in the New England Football Conference opener for both teams.

Salve (3-0) had 456 yards offense in the first half, 332 rushing, and finished with 601 yards overall.

Coast Guard upset the Seahawks last season in New London, 21-20, blocking a pair of punts and kicking a last-second field goal for the victory.

This time, Salve led 21-0 with 9 minutes, 19 seconds still remaining in the first quarter, scoring on three straight possessions. James Dawson (203 total yards, 2 TDs) ran for a 61-yard touchdown on his first carry of the game and on a 39-yard run on his second carry to set the tone.

Coast Guard senior quarterback Derek Victory, who missed the second half of last week's game against Catholic due to injury, was 10-for-25 passing for 52 yards and was intercepted for the first time this season. That snapped a streak of 248 straight passes, dating back to last year, without an interception.

Sophomore quarterback Ethan Goldcamp (10-22, 65 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) replaced Victory on the first possession of the second quarter with the Bears trailing 35-0 and played the remainder of the first half and returned in the fourth quarter.

Coast Guard (1-3) scored with 8:42 left in the third quarter on a 26-yard field goal by Patrick Crowley, which was set up when freshman Michael Goldsworthy recovered a fumbled punt at the Salve 26.

Goldcamp then threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to junior Darius Adams in the fourth quarter. It was the fifth receiving touchdown of the season for Adams, a total which leads the conference.

Coast Guard returns home next weekend for a 1:30 p.m. game against Maine Maritime.
