Amber Cox named vice president of Sun, Black Wolves

Mohegan — Amber Cox, who has held a variety of executive and administrative posts in professional and collegiate sports, was named vice president of the WNBA's Connecticut Sun and National Lacrosse League's New England Black Wolves on Thursday.

"I'm thrilled to be joining the Mohegan Sun organization," Cox said in a statement released by the two franchises. "I look forward to working with my talented team to build on the solid foundation of both the Sun and Black Wolves, doing our part to extend Mohegan Sun's reputation as a world-class entertainment venue.

"We want to be known as the toughest place for opponents to play in both leagues and ensure an unmatched experience for our players, fans and sponsors."

Cox will be responsible for the overall operation of both franchises.

"We are very gratified to have someone with Amber's breadth of experience joining our operation," Sun president and senior advisor to the Tribal Council Mitchell Etess said. "There is no question she will be a tremendous asset to our sports operation as we move forward."

Cox has been chief marketing officer of Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo since January 2015, where she oversaw all aspects of the marketing, broadcast, branding, digital/social strategies, media relations and community relations for the Dynamo, Houston Dash of the National Women's Soccer League, BBVA Compass Stadium and Houston Sports Park.

Before working in Houston, she spent two years as associate commissioner for women's basketball at the Big East Conference, where she managed all aspects of the league, including scheduling, officiating, television, branding and marketing.

Cox also spent nine seasons with the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, serving as director of marketing for seven seasons before being promoted to the dual title of president and chief marketing officer, where she was responsible for all business and basketball operations.

She was recognized for her success in the Phoenix Business Journal as one of its "Forty-under-40 Class of 2012." Cox directed the marketing and sales initiatives behind the selection of Brittney Griner as the WNBA's No. 1 overall pick in 2013, an effort that led to record-setting sales, website viewership and media impressions.

Cox, a Missouri native, earned her bachelor's degree in communications/journalism and master's degree in business administration at Williams Woods University in Fulton, Missouri.
