UConn student dead after campus fire department SUV hit her responding to a call
Storrs — A UConn student died early Sunday morning when she was run over by a UConn Fire Department SUV that a firefighter was driving to the scene of an emergency call, state police said.
State Police identified the victim as Jeffny Pally, 19, of West Hartford.
Pally was sitting with her back against an exterior door to the UConn Fire Department at 1:13 a.m. when the department received a call to respond to an emergency scene at 100 North Eagleville Road, just a few hundred feet from the public safety complex, according to a state police report of the incident.
The department’s shift commander, Dana E. Barrow Jr., 60, mechanically opened the bay door so he could drive the vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, to the scene. According to the report, Pally fell to the ground when the door was opened.
As Barrow drove out of the garage, the SUV ran over Pally and killed her, police said.
The State's Attorney Office, UConn officials and the State Police Crash Analysis Reconstruction Squad are investigating.
