Montville residents have until April to apply for town-issued home repair loan

Montville — Low- and moderate-income homeowners who want to make repairs to their homes have a few more months to apply for loans from a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant the town received in 2015.

Homeowners in Montville who are up-to-date on their municipal taxes and have at least 10 percent equity in the home are eligible to apply for the grant. The money is provided as a no-interest loan and payments are not due to the town until the house changes ownership.

When the town received the grant in 2015, officials said it was aimed at helping low- and moderate-income households pay for upgrades like roof replacement, heating systems, window replacement, lead paint and asbestos removal, and electrical and code upgrades.

Towns with fewer than 50,000 residents were eligible to apply for the grant, which is administered by the state Department of Housing using federal funds allocated to Connecticut by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Lou Severino, an employee at Lisa Low & Associates, the firm distributing the grant for the town, said two households in Montville so far have qualified for the program. They made repairs to a septic system, a sidewalk, a roof, windows and other small projects, he said.

Applicants must have an annual income less than $46,100 for individual homeowners or $52,650 for a household of two.

The funds also can be used to modify homes for handicapped accessibility by adding entrance ramps and bathroom adaptations.

Applications and more information are available at the Montville town clerk's office in Town Hall or with Lisa Low & Associates at (203) 888-5624.
