    Local colleges: Avery Point splits baseball doubleheader with CCRI

    Groton — Avery Point split a doubleheader with the Community College of Rhode Island on Saturday at Washington Park, edging closer to the NJCAA Region 21 baseball title.

    Avery Point (20-10) won the opener 12-1 before CCRI (22-4) won the second game 4-2. The teams play seven games this season with the winner of the series advancing to the regionals. The Pointers lead the series 3-1. The teams play a three-game series May 12-14.

    Waterford's Josh Vincent went six innings for the win in the opener. Vincent (4-3) gave up two hits and struck out eight, allowing just an unearned run. Mike Chiovitti had four hits, scored twice and drove in three runs and Waterford's Justin Keating and Mike Rocchetti had two hits, two RBI and scored twice each.

    In the second game, CCRI got four hits and four runs off East Lyme's C.J. Leindecker in the first inning. Leindecker (4-1) shut out CCRI over the final six innings on three hits with seven strikeouts, but the Pointers couldn't recover. Avery Point's offense came from solo homers by Mike Corso and Vinny Pallisco. 

    In other games:

    • Mitchell College defeated Lesley 6-3 in the first game of a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader and led the second game 2-1 in the first  inning when the game was suspended by rain. It will resume on Sunday at noon before the teams play their regularly scheduled game at Lesley. Axel DeJesus (4-4) won the opener for the Mariners (20-10, 8-3), taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Mitchell took a 2-0 lead in the third on Kyle Hartenstein's two-double RBI double and Francis Prettitore's RBI single and broke the game open in the fourth with four runs, including an RBI single by Hartenstein.

    • Clark received complete-game efforts from Cal Slepkow and Conor Walsh in a 7-2, 15-0 doubleheader sweep of Coast Guard Academy in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Alex Murdoch had three hits in the opener for the Bears (12-22, 3-13), including an RBI single, while Brendan McNeil tripled home the other run. Kyle Jackson had three of Coast Guard's six hits in the second game.

    • Tyler Gnesda's solo homer in the eighth inning snapped a 5-5 tie and lifted UConn to a 6-5 victory over Central Florida in an American Athletic Conference game in Orlando. Aaron Hill, a senior from Fitch, added a sacrifice fly for the Huskies (22-15, 7-4) in his first start since March 16 and ex-Avery Point pitcher John Russell recorded a six-out saves, his AAC-leading 11th of the season.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Charlie Fay scored five goals to lead No. 2 Bates to a 16-14 win over Connecticut College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Camels led Bates (12-0, 9-0) 10-7 with three minutes left in the third period before the Bobcats scored six of the next seven goals to take the lead for good. Ross Thompson had three goals and two assists, Sean Smith had three goals and an assist, P.J. Kelleher had a goal and five assists and Ben Parens won 26-of-33 faceoffs for Conn (7-7, 3-6).

    • Coast Guard beat Emerson 18-6 in a NEWMAC game. Sophomore Jack Pope had five goals and one assist and, on his second goal of the game, broke Justin Huemme's school record with his 50th goal. Benner Geurtsen and Cole Hudson had three goals each and freshman Riley McNulty scored twice to set the single-season goal record at 32 for Coast Guard (9-5, 3-2).

    • Regis captured the NECC regular-season crown with a 17-9 win over Mitchell. Kyle Marsh and Jacob Stezko scored three goals apiece for the Mariners (2-9, 1-3).

    Women's lacrosse

    • Ashley Murtha scored seven goals to lead Mitchell College to a 10-8 win over Daniel Webster in the NECC. Callie Santo Salvo had a pair of goals, Allina Duncan scored and Gillian MacLellan made six saves for the Mariners (3-6, 2-5).

    • Coast Guard closed out its season with a 12-6 loss to Smith in the NEWMAC. Daria McKenna, the former Fitch standout, scored four goals for Coast Guard (3-13, 0-8). McKenna, a junior, is the career leader in goals (48), assists (12) and points (60) for the Bears.

    • Bates led 11-3 midway through the second half and held on to beat Conn College 12-9 in the NESCAC. Tina Balzotti and Julia Loesch scored three goals each, Lacey Hale had two goals and an assist, Balzotti had two assists and Annie Cornbrooks and Loesch had assist for Conn (3-11, 0-9).

    Softball

    • Coast Guard was swept in a NEWMAC doubleheader by Smith, losing the opener 9-0 and the second game 6-4. Emma Hvozdovich homered and freshman Audrey Bartz had a two-run single in the second game for Coast Guard (16-17, 3-13).

    • Becker swept Mitchell in an NECC doubleheader, winning the first game 11-2 and the second game 18-0. Samantha DelConte scored both runs for Mitchell (7-18, 3-11) and teammate Italia Krick doubled in the second game.

    Men's track & field

    • Coast Guard sophomore Justin Jezuit won a pair of events at the Springfield College Classic, capturing the hammer throw (153 feet, 10 inches) and the discus (142-1). Ben Zarlengo also placed in both events, finishing fourth in the hammer (138-1) and fifth in the discus (131-9). Also for the Bears, Sawyer Stanton was second in the high jump (6-6), Michael Frick was second in the pole vault (14-11), Brett Foster was second in the 800 (1:55.37), Edward Carroll was fourth in the triple jump (40-4.75) and Will Klein was fifth in the 800 (1:57.64).

    Coast Guard also competed in the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princetown, a meeting featuring athletes from Divisions I, II and III, and the Bears' 4x400-meter relay team of Benjamin Taminger, Jacob Pawlina, Luke Rehfuss and Raeford Penny placed fifth in 3:19.97, the third fastest time run by a Division III team in New England this spring.

    • Conn College sophomore Mike D'Onofrio had the Camels' top finish at the Trinity College Invite, placing fourth in the javelin (159-3). Jacob-Brill Weil added a sixth in the 800 (2:00.61) for the Camels.

    Women's track & field

    • Coast Guard's Caitlin Piker and Caroline Jenkins were individual winners at the Springfield College Classic. Piker won the javelin with a throw of 126 feet, 8 inches while Jenkins captured the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.81 (she was also third in the 110 hurdles in 16.61). In addition, Gabrielle Troise added a second in the shot put (33-4.75) and fourth in the hammer (156-3). Adora Lawrence was third in the 800 (2:17.78), Bonny Turnage was fourth in the 5K (18:41.61) and Sarah Cummings was fifth in the 400 (1:00.58).

    • Conn College's Koko Mensah won the shot put (41-8) and placed third in the discus (124-8) to lead the Camels at the Trinity College Invite. Also for Conn, Emily Senatore was second in the discus (126-4) and fifth in the hammer (125-8), Leila Alfaro was second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.0), Amanda Jacobsen was third in the pole vault (9-0.25), Aly Saperstein was fourth in the javelin (123-0), as was the 4x100 relay team of Alfaro, Alicia Palmer, Kaitlin Thomas and Ivana Lamptey (52.51).
