    Local roundup: New London Legion beats TriTown 7-2

    Putnam — Elijah Martinez had three hits as New London won its second straight game to open the American Legion Zone VI baseball season with a 7-2 victory over TriTown on Friday night.

    Jeremy Santos and Hendrik Khoury each added two hits for New London and Trevor Bolduc added a double.

    Hunter Nadeau earned the win, allowing two unearned runs over five innings, while Brandon Beck followed with two scoreless innings of relief.

    • Corey Joyce's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the New Bedford Bay Sox to a 5-4 victory over the Mystic Schooners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Nick Mascelli (Wagner) went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI to lead the Schooners (0-2) while Andrew Gazzola (Stony Brook) had two hits and scored twice. 

    H.S. track and field

    • Waterford's Devin Craig has qualified for the New England Championships in a pair of individual events. Craig, a senior, is scheduled to take part in the high jump and 110-meter hurdles at Saturday's meet, which will be held at Norwell (Mass.) High School. In addition, Norwich Free Academy's Jawaun Johnson will take part in the 100 dash and 4x100 relay with RJ Darby, Marcus Gates and Cruz Quintana, while Waterford's Sophia Podeszwa qualified in the 300 hurdles and 4x400 relay with Jen Keth, Zora LaBonte and Lia Scala.

    Other local boys' qualifiers are East Lyme's Dylan Hatajik (100), Montville's Greg Clark (200), Montville's Nik Strickland (400), NFA's Nick Fith (800), Stonington's Cam Whalen (110 hurdles) and Ledyard's Collin Wiltshire (triple jump). Other local girls' qualifiers are Stonington's Kate Hall (100), Montville's Mady Whittaker (800) and NFA's Allyson Lewis (high jump).
