    Local roundup: Schooners rally for a 4-3 win

    Groton — The Mystic Schooners picked up their first win of the season, rallying for a 4-3 win over the Plymouth Pilgrims on Sunday night.

    The Schooners, the defending New England Collegiate Baseball League champions, are 1-3. Avery Point standout Vinnie Pallisco scored the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Nick Mascelli (Wagner) in the botton of the ninth. Brett Bond (Columbia-Missouri) tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth.

    Plymouth scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Mystic got on the scoreboard on a solo homer by Brian Rey (Miami Dade) in the bottom of the second. Mascelli was 3-for-4 and Mystic starter Steven Theetge (Bryant) allowed six hits over five innings with six strikeouts and no walks. Turner French (St. John's) was the winning pitcher.  

    H.S. track and field

    • The CIAC will stage its girls' heptathlon, boys' decathlon and boys' and girls' hammer throw and steeplechase on Tuesday and Wednesday at Willow Brook Park in New Britain. The heptathlon and decathlon will take place both teams, the heptathlon starting at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday and 11 a.m. on Wednesday (the decathlon will start at 11 both days), while the girls' hammer (2:30 p.m.) and steeplechase (3:30 p.m.) will be held on Tuesday and the boys' hammer (2:30 p.m.) and steeplechase (3:30) will be held on Wednesday.

    Following is a list of local athletes who are expected to compete:

    Girls' 2,000-meter steeplechase: Lillian Whittacker (East Lyme), Lily Anderson (Stonington), Lindsey Orr (Stonington).

    Girls' hammer: Jamie Foster (East Lyme), Marissa Yambao (Stonington).

    Heptathlon: Rhema Phillips (Grasso Tech), Lauren Ross (Montville), Zora LaBonte (Waterford), Isabelle Riker (East Lyme), Sophia Podeszwa (Waterford), Anna Foster (Stonington).

    Boys' 2000 steeplechase: Gager Collier (Fitch), Daniel Gaiewski (Fitch), Rhys Hammond (Stonington), Chase Flynn (Stonington), Max Wojtas (Stonington).

    Boys' hammer: Dmitri Van Duine (Stonington), Grayson DelGross (Stonington), Noah Pereira (Stonington).

    Decathlon: Chris Holmes (Fitch), Alex Schwindt (Fitch), Ethan Alves (Fitch), Nik Strickland (Montville), Shane Smith (Stonington), Cam Whalen (Stonington), Joe Hinckley (Stonington).
