Antique and classic boats rendezvous at Mystic Seaport

The Mystic Seaport schooner Brilliant is featured in the Antique & Classic Boat Rendezvous.

Editor's note: This version corrects the time of the boat parade.

These are the boats that catch your eye out on the water, that take your attention for maybe a little longer than is safe as you cruise by, and that make you wish you’d stopped to ask how they keep their gelcoat so polished, their varnish so even, and so on. They are the beautiful celebrities, after all, these boats, and we take pictures and gawk, but the Antique & Classic Boat Rendezvous at Mystic Seaport is their red carpet event — here, it is perfectly normal to stare.

All day Saturday and Sunday morning at the Mystic Seaport waterfront, 50 antique and classic boats of the cruiser, sail and runabout varieties will be docked, clean, polished and pretty, ready for visitors to behold. Among them will be the museum’s own schooner Brilliant, an early Sparkman & Stephens design. This being the schooner’s 85th anniversary, Sparkman & Stephens’ designs will be the featured vessels of this year’s rendezvous.

On Saturday night, the museum will host a “Docktails & Dancing” party with a cash bar, desserts and music by local group Sugar.

On Sunday, the boat parade parade will leave Mystic Seaport at 11:45 a.m., take off down the Mystic River, through the bascule bridge around noon, and out into Fishers Island Sound.
