Waterford — Mikey Buscetto, among the most accomplished basketball players in the history of Waterford High School, accepted a full scholarship offer Thursday to Division II Southern New Hampshire.

Buscetto chose Southern New Hampshire over several other schools, including Division I Brown and Bryant, Division II Stonehill and Division III Salve Regina.

“Everything about it felt right,” Buscetto said. “The campus, the coaches, the program and they have a sports management major.”

Buscetto is believed to be the first boys’ basketball player in Waterford High School history to have earned a full college scholarship in basketball only.

Southern New Hampshire is one of the country’s most successful Division II programs. The Penman have played in two Final Fours and made seven trips to the Elite Eight, the most recent of which came in 2015. They compete in the Northeast 10 Conference with Southern Connecticut and New Haven, among others.

Buscetto’s father, Mike, also played in the Northeast 10 when Quinnipiac was a member in the early 90s.

Buscetto, who averaged 20 points and 10 assists per game last season, led the Lancers to a division title within the Eastern Connecticut Conference, a berth in the ECC championship game and to the second round of the Class M state tournament.
