Sun, Mercury to hold food drives involving Jones, Griner

The Connecticut Sun and Phoenix Mercury are holding matching food drives featuring a dunk challenge between Connecticut’s Jonquel Jones and Brittney Griner of the Mercury.

There are two games left between the teams — at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday, and at Phoenix on Sept. 1. Both teams will collect canned goods and non-perishable food items until the latter game. The team that collects the most pounds of food will earn a $500 donation from the other team for its food bank. The Sun are partnering with the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center, which has 81 food centers and feeds almost 20,000 people per month.

There will be another side contest between Griner and Jones. If the Sun win the food drive, then Griner must dunk wearing a Jones jersey. If the Mercury win, Jones will dunk in a Griner jersey. Video of the dunk will be shared on team and player social media channels.

Collection bins will be set up on the Mohegan Sun Arena concourse for Sun home games on Aug 20, 23 and 25. Season ticket members may also donate at the annual member party on Aug. 22nd.
