Maine Maritime sends CGA to third straight loss 34-16

Castine, Maine — Maine Maritime quarterback Corey Creeger threw a pair of touchdown passes, ran for a third and had 329 yards of total offense as the Mariners rolled to a 34-16 victory over Coast Guard Academy in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference football game on Saturday.

It was the first win of the season for Maine Maritime (1-5, 1-3) while the Bears (3-4, 1-3) suffered their third straight loss.

Creeger rushed for 212 yards on 26 carries as the Mariners ran for 324 yards and had 441 yards of total offense. Coast Guard, meanwhile, was held to 230 total yards.

Despite its struggles, CGA was in this game until late. Trailing 20-9 at halftime, the Bears scored on their opening possession of the second half, pulling to within four, 20-16, when Cam Cecchini capped a 68-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown with 10:43 left in the quarter.

Late in the third, however, Creeger broke free for 56 yards to set up a Jacob Doolan five-yard touchdown run and Creeger's conversion pass to Mason Kaserman stretched the lead to 28-16 with 4:52 left in the quarter.

The Bears still had some chances to get back in the game, covering a pair of fumbles in Mariner territory in the fourth quarter — one by Titus Creamer and the other by Jake Behne. But the offense turned it over on downs the first time before John Bennett intercepted a Ryan Jones pass at the Maine Maritime 10 with 4:42 to play.

Creeger then hit Kaserman, who raced 90 yards for a touchdown to ice the game.

Jones was 16 of 31 for 123 yards with three interceptions. Cecchini led the Bears with 17 carries for 76 yards.

Maine Maritime went 14 plays on the game's opening possession, chewing up just over eight minutes before Creeger threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Casale on a fourth-and-5 with 6:56 left in the first quarter. Patrick Crowley blocked the extra point and Will Daniels returned it all the way to make the score 6-2.

Following an exchange of punts, Trenton Bouchard intercepted Jones at the Mariner 45 and on the next play Creeger ran 55 yards for a touchdown for a 12-2 lead with 2:19 left in the first.

Coast Guard responded as Jones scored on a 3-yard run to cap an 83-yard drive making the score 12-9 following Austin's extra point with 13:04 left in the first half. Senior Darius Adams had a key 18-yard reception during the drive.

A running into the kicker penalty extended Maine Maritime's next offensive possession and the Mariners capitalized when Doolan ran three yards for a score on fourth-and-2 with 56 seconds left in the half (he also ran for the two-point conversion).

Sophomore R.J. Robiskie led the Bears with 10 tackles. Coast Guard returns to New London next Saturday to face MIT on Homecoming Weekend at 1:30 p.m.
