Jimmy Webb entertains Tuesday at The Kate

Editor's note: Jimmy Webb is recovering from the flu and this show has been postponed until March 20. All tickets will be honored for that performance.

Have you ever noticed that journalists, musicians and PR folks always use the phrase "singer/songwriter" — as though the vocalization deserves slightly higher billing than the composition of the tune?

Yeah, I know, it could be alphabetical, but still ...

How about this: songwriter/singer Jimmy Webb performs Tuesday in a sold-out show at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. I rearranged the order because, though he has a fine voice, Webb is inarguably one of the greatest pop songwriters of all time. Doesn't matter whether you're an Ellington/Porter/Gershwin/Arlan devotee or of the latter Lennon/McCartney/Wonder/Wilson/Nelson contingency.

Jimmy Webb absolutely belongs. I sometimes grow weary that it's necessary to actually list some of his work but: "Galveston," "Wichita Lineman," "Up, Up and Away," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress," "MacArthur Park ..."

Bonus #1: This concert will be filmed for future presentation on Connecticut Public Television's "The Kate" series. Bonus #2: Webb is most associated with Glen Campbell, who recorded so many of the songs. Campbell's daughter Ashley, a terrific singer/musician, will join Webb for the show.

Jimmy Webb with Ashley Campbell, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center; sold out; thekate.org; 1-877-503-1286.
