Kings of Chaos supergroup plays Foxwoods

Bassist/songwriterGlenn Hughesof the supergroupKings of Chaos.

When the marketing folks came up with the idea of the Kings of Chaos rock supergroup and selected the participating musicians, Glenn Hughes was maybe the “afterthought dude.”

After all, the band, playing Saturday in the Grand Theater at Foxwoods, includes Cheap Trick’s Robin Zander, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens, and three Guns N’ Roses alumni in Matt Sorum, Gilby Clarke and Duff McKagan.

For my money, though, the true big shot in this lineup is Hughes.

The bassist/songwriter has one of the most amazing voices in rock history — not to mention an incredible pedigree. Hughes was in Trapeze (you’re an idiot if you don’t own their “Medusa” and “You Are the Music, We’re Just the Band” albums). He was in Hughes/Thrall (you’re an idiot if you don’t get goosebumps every time you hear “The Look in Your Eyes). He was in Deep Purple (ditto the idiot thing if you don’t love the “Burn” LP).

Lately, Hughes has done solid work with Joe Bonamassa and Jason Bonham in Black Country Communion, and who can forget the cassette I have of Hughes and my old pal Rocky Athas — a four-track recording they did years ago in Dallas of a monstrously great original tune called “Easy Touch”? (That’s right, Glenn and Rocky: y’all didn’t know I still have that, did you?)

Anyway, it’ll be a hits buffet on Saturday and Hughes will be really good — even if the Kings don’t play “Easy Touch.”
