Forbes: Mohegan Sun among 'America's Best Employers'

Mohegan — Forbes magazine has named Mohegan Sun one of "America's Best Employers" for 2015.

Mohegan Sun — including the Mohegan Tribe's flagship casino in Uncasville as well as Mohegan Sun Pocono in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. — was listed as the 12th-best employer in the magazine's Travel & Leisure category, putting it in the company of such well-known companies as Walt Disney Parks & Resorts and Marriott International. Mohegan Sun was the second-highest-ranked gaming company in the category.

The Connecticut and Pennsylvania casinos' parent company, the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, also manages Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. The three properties employ a total of more than 10,000 workers.

“This is a huge honor for us and a testament to our dedicated team members who work tirelessly to make our resorts the best in the industry,” Bobby Soper, president of the authority, said in a statement. “We pride ourselves on providing an outstanding environment for our team members and this recognition is a compelling endorsement of that effort.”

Connecticut politicians weighed in on the recognition.

“Mohegan Sun has always been a good neighbor and a strong partner to state government. That they are counted among the nation’s top employers is further reason to celebrate," Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman said in a joint statement. "We congratulate Chairman (Kevin) Brown and the Mohegan Tribe on this honor.”

U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney added, “With thousands of my Second District constituents employed at Mohegan Sun, I am well aware of their reputation as a sought-after employer. I am pleased to see Mohegan Sun earning national recognition for their high rate of satisfaction among their eastern Connecticut employees.”

At Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, more than 11 percent of the workforce has been with the organization since opening day more than 18 years ago. Roughly 75 percent of all employees holding leadership positions have been promoted from within. According to Mohegan Sun, it has an employee retention rate of more than 80 percent, far exceeding the national average for hospitality companies.

Forbes' rankings were based on the results of an independent survey of American employees conducted by Statista, a leading statistics company.

Mohegan Sun was honored Wednesday at the Disability Matters North America Conference at Simmons College in Boston, where it received a "Steps to Success" award in recognition of its job-training program for those with disabilities. The program, conducted in partnership with the nonprofit Community Enterprises Inc., has placed more than 120 people in positions at the casino.
