Electric Boat wins $102.8 million contract
Groton — The U.S. Navy has awarded Electric Boat a $102.8 million contract modification to make improvements and evaluate new technology related to the development of a revamped Virginia-class attack submarine.
For Electric Boat, a subsidiary of General Dynamics Corp., the contract increases the value of the original Navy design contract awarded five years ago to $1.1 billion.
“Under the contract, Electric Boat will undertake development studies and other work related to Virginia-class submarine design improvements,” according to a General Dynamics release. “Additionally, Electric Boat will perform research and development work required to evaluate new technology to be inserted in newly built Virginia-class ships.”
Virginia-class subs, built jointly by EB and the Newport News shipyard in Virginia, cost about $2.7 billion each.
Just last week, Catherine White, senior manager of human resources at EB, said she expects the company to hire between 250 and 400 people locally every year for the next three to five years as it gears up for a two-subs-a-year delivery schedule in the near future.
In addition, EB is gearing up to design the new replacement Ohio class of Trident-missile nuclear submarines.
