No eyebrows raised in New London
New London — Robin Evans had a dream of making it in New York City, and she did for 14 years — only to return this winter to the city she loves and where she now has started up a new business.
Evans, stepdaughter of famed local restaurateur Hughie Devlin, left New London in the early 2000s with the intention of never returning. Now she has settled down with a home on Pequot Avenue and her eponymous business Robin Evans Brows located in the New London Antiques Center on Bank Street.
The spare 300-square-foot space may seem a far cry from the singers, models and actresses she worked with in New York City, but she likes the sense of independence it gives her compared with being associated with a hair salon.
"I thought it was cool," she said. "I wanted something a little bit edgier. It was the only space I looked at."
Evans, a former model herself, has specialized in brows for a quarter century. In New York, she has been named one of the city's top eyebrow salons by Allure, Lucky and New York magazines.
She has had famous clients, she said, such as the pop star Keisha and Kelly Bensimon of "Real Housewives of New York." And she still returns to New York on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to maintain her presence in the city.
But it's her return to New London for clients she sees by appointment on Thursdays through Saturdays that she looks forward to the most.
"It's fun for me to see old friends and old faces," she said. "I feel very welcomed back here professionally and otherwise."
Evans charges $20 for brow shaping, $15 for brow tinting and $35 for lash tinting.
"It's a craft for me and an art for me," Evans said. "It's all I do. I've been doing it for 25 years."
Brows have always been her specialty, but she also does makeup as well as lip and chin waxing.
Evans years ago had been associated with Nancy's Salon on Meridien Street, but now that she's established her own brand she enjoys a fair amount of word-of-mouth referrals as well as maintaining a presence on Facebook. She is open by appointment only mostly on Thursdays through Saturdays, spending Tuesdays and Wednesday back at the business she runs with the help of staff in New York.
She returned to New London in January, impressed with strides the city has made lately, especially in the quality and mix of its restaurants.
"New London has changed," Evans said. "There's a diversity here that makes me comfortable and happy to be here."
The Waterford High School graduate and former kitchen staffer at the long-gone Hughie's Restaurant started seeing clients this month. Most have been female, and while Evans prefers a more natural look she is able to create a variety of striking styles.
"I love this town," Evans said. "I'm happy to be back."
