Groton — For the first time, Comcast has begun selling mobile phones and wireless service packages to current customers with its usual bundle of cable television, landline and Internet services.

And its store at the Groton Square Shopping Center is among the first in the country to offer the new retail rollout, said Comcast spokeswoman Kristen L. Roberts, vice president of communications for the company's Western New England Region.

Xfinity Mobile, a new wireless service announced last week, is being offered in the local store as well as in Cromwell, Danbury, North Haven, Waterbury and West Hartford. Comcast uses "America's largest and most reliable 4G LTE network with 17 million Xfinity WiFi hotspots," according to a news release.

“We’re excited to be one of the first areas of the country to unveil Xfinity Mobile at Xfinity Stores,” said Michael Parker, senior vice president for Comcast’s Western New England Region, in a statement.

Earlier this week, the Xfinity Store here was hopping as customers came in to check out the new offering, which includes a $45-a-month unlimited plan or a $12-per-gigabyte option. Customers can even switch between the two plans from month to month, anticipating changing usage.

The mix-and-match theme continues for up to five lines, since the person using each line can decide on the best plan for the user.

"It's been helping customers save money on their mobile charges," Roberts said.

Roberts added that Xfinity is offering a wide range of Apple and Android phones at the stores, including the popular Samsung models. The phones are preloaded with an Xfinity app that makes it easy to access up to 200 live television channels offered by Comcast, as well as 40,000 on-demand titles, she said.

This is the first time Comcast has been so integrated into its customers' end-user experience, she said, and customers will be able to bring phones to Xfinity Stores for repair, while company representatives also will be available at consumer-electronics stores such as Best Buy, Roberts said.
