Ollie has no plans to leave UConn

For the second straight spring, UConn men's basketball coach Kevin Ollie is being mentioned as a possible candidate for an NBA coaching job.

Ollie, who just finished his third season in charge in Storrs, issued a statement Wednesday in an attempt to squash the rumors and speculation surrounding his future.

“As I have said many times, I am proud and honored to be the head basketball coach at the University of Connecticut and I have no plans to pursue other opportunities,” Ollie said in a released statement.

“We are already excited about next season and I am looking forward to preparing our team to be the best we can be on the court, in the classroom, and in our community.”

Hours after Ollie issued his statement, the rumor mill kicked into high gear when Oklahoma City fired head coach Scott Brooks.

Oklahoma City was Ollie’s last stop during his NBA playing career. He has strong ties to that organization and Thunder general manager Sam Presti. He’s also a former teammate of all-star Kevin Durant.

Presti said during a press conference Wednesday that he hasn’t had any contact with anybody about the job.

According to Yahoo Sports, both Florida’s Billy Donovan and Ollie are strong candidates for the job.

The rumors could potentially hurt UConn on the recruiting trail. Ollie signed a five-year, $15 million contract last year. If Ollie leaves for another job before May 31, UConn would receive a $5 million buyout. The buyout number falls to $4 million after May 31.

A year after leading the Huskies to a national championship, Ollie guided UConn to a 20-15 record and berth in the NIT last season.
