Mitchell bows out of NECC tournament

New London - Mitchell College dropped only two New England Collegiate Conference softball games on the way to winning its first regular season title.

The host Mariners lost two games in one long day on Friday to be eliminated from the NECC tournament. They suffered a pair of painful extra inning defeats at Alumni Field, falling to Newbury College, 4-3, in nine innings and Becker College, 3-2, in 11 innings.

Costly errors contributed to their downfall in both games.

Brittany Fiederlein was the hard-luck loser in both games, allowing 15 hits and only four earned runs while striking out 21 and walking just two while pitching in 19-plus innings.

In its tournament opener Friday, top-seeded Mitchell faced a Newbury team that swept the Mariners in the regular-season series. Mitchell scored three runs in the third inning on Samantha DelConte's fielder's choice, Shannon O'Neil's double and Fiederlein's single, but fourth-seeded Newbury battled back and eventually scored the winning run on two errors in what was the longest game in NECC tournament history.

Fiederlein finished with three hits in Mitchell's first home loss this season.

In the second game, Mitchell rallied to tie the game and force extra innings with two runs in the seventh inning, scoring on Danielle Autieri's double and St. Bernard School graduate Rivkah Berkman's two-out single.

But the Mariners (17-15) made two of their five errors in the 11th, leading to third-seeded Becker's winning run.

Second-seeded Elms College advanced to the championship round with two wins on Friday.
