Coast Guard baseball season ends with loss in NEWMAC quarterfinal

Babson Park, Mass. — Coast Guard Academy failed to solve Babson pitcher Teddy Carey, ending the season with a 9-2 loss in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference baseball tournament quarterfinal action.

Carey allowed just one hit and struck out eight in 7.2 innings to send fourth-seeded Babson (22-13-1) to the tournament semifinals. No. 5 Coast Guard (16-21) managed just two hits overall.

Jack Weiss had two hits and three RBI while Jack Halpin was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Beavers.

Junior Kyle Jackson and freshman Will Stephens each finished with a hit for Coast Guard.

Coast Guard took an early lead thanks to four Babson miscues in the top of the third. Mark Behne and fellow senior Cory Sonnega reached on back-to-back errors to start the frame, and then took advantage of an error at the plate and a failed pick off to grab a 2-0 lead.

The Beavers surged in front with four runs in the sixth. David Lennon gave the Beavers the lead with an RBI single and Weiss delivered a two-run triple to make it 5-2.

Junior Eric Vrissis suffered the loss for Coast Guard after allowing five earned runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings.

Game one in Babson's best-of-three series at top-seeded MIT is set for Saturday in Cambridge, Mass.
