    Local college roundup: UConn wins baseball opener

    Port St. Lucie, Fla. — Tim Cate pitched seven strong innings as UConn opened its baseball season with a 5-3 win over UMass Lowell on Friday night.

    Cate allowed two hits and no runs over 7.1 innings with 13 strikeouts and one walk. Zac Susi homered and tripled and Conor Moriarty and Tyler Gnesda had two hits each for UConn.

    Men's swimming

    • Coast Guard sophomore Tyler Rowe won the 500 freestyle at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's championships, helping the Bears move into second place with two days remaining. Rowe, who broke the school record in the event on Thursday at 4:30.69, won with a time of 4:31.78. MIT leads with 534 points and the Bears have 384.

    • Conn College is in fourth place after one day at the NESCAC championships. The Camels have 499.5 points while Williams College leads with 643. Conn's team of George Tilneac, Drake Freiberg, Michael Fothergill and Niko Brosnihan won the 200 freestyle relay with e NESCAC record time of 1:21.35. Fothergill also won the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.48.

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard got a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay at the NEWMAC championships. The team of former Fitch standout Jackie Kokomoor, Kristen Young, Addy Rutkoske and Tr4icia Talens had a time of 1:38.12.

    Women's hockey 

    • Katherine Chester of Connecticut College stopped all 23 shots she faced but the Camels settled for a 0-0 tie with Hamilton in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Conn (13-7-3, 9-5-1) outshot Hamilton, 31-23. The teams close out their regular seasons with another game at Dayton Arena Saturday at 3 p.m. Sam Walther made 31 saves for Hamilton (14-6-3, 9-4-2).

    Men's hockey

    • UConn was outshot 33-20 in a 3-0 loss to Northeastern in Hockey East. Adam Huska made 30 saves for UConn (10-12-8, 6-8-4).

    • Conn College dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 14 Colby in a NESCAC game. Jeff Thompson had a third-period goal for Conn (4-16-2, 2-13-2) with Connor Rodericks making 36 saves and Chris Jellison and Mason Evans getting assists.  

    Men's basketball

    • St. Thomas More lost to Brewster Academy on Thursday, 86-66. Maceo Jack and Tyrei Randall had 16 points each and EJ Anosike scored 10 for T-More.
