    Local college roundup: Record belongs to Mitchell's Murtha with 15 goals

    Longmeadow, Mass. — Ashley Murtha of Mitchell College broke the NCAA Division III record for most goals in a women's lacrosse game with 15, but the Mariners lost to Bay Path 26-16 in a New England Collegiate Conference game Tuesday.

    Murtha, a senior, tied the record with a 14-goal performance in a 17-14 loss to Becker on Saturday. Willeen Pun had a goal and an assist for Mitchell (2-6, 1-5).

    In other games:

    • Kirby Heffrin and Tina Balzotti scored four goals each as Connecticut College beat Mount Holyoke 19-4. Hannah Donegan had two goals and two assists, Madison Barker and Annie Cornbrooks each scored twice, Anna Jorgensen had five assists and Julia Loesch had three assists for Conn (2-10).

    Baseball

    • Mystic's Cooper Robinson had four hits, scored four runs and drove in two as Avery Point beat Quinsigamond 14-4 in six innings on a mercy rule. Mike Chiovitti had three hits and scored three runs, Waterford's Mike Rocchetti had three hits and Malcolm Alleyne had two hits for the Pointers (18-9). Dan Botti and Chaz Cywin (2-0) combined to pitch a one-hitter.

    • Joey Santigate went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs as Wheaton defeated Coast Guard Academy 7-2 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Kyle Jackson doubled home a run for the Bears (12-20, 3-11) and Alex Murdoch added a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Jackson, Zach Serna, Alex Cordes and Will Stephens all had two hits for Coast Guard.

    • Mitchell College was held to three hits in a 9-3 loss to Wesleyan. Mystic's Tristan Hurley had a hit and drove in a run for Mitchell (18-10).

    • Chris Winkel had three hits and drove in three runs as UConn beat UMass 11-3. Troy Stefanski, the former Wheeler standout, was 2-for-6 with a triple, for UConn (21-14). 

    Softball

    • Coast Guard broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and beat Bay Path 8-2. Claire Hurley of Waterford was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, Kayla Sowers doubled and drove in two runs and Casey Cruzpino, Malia Hindle and Sharayah Simco had two hits each for Coast Guard (16-15). Julia Ferris (9-10) pitched an eight-hitter for the win, striking out a career-high nine.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Blake Boutiette scored with one minute left in overtime as Becker beat Mitchell 8-7 in an NECC game. Jacob Setzko scored three goals, former Montville standout Kyle Marsh had two goals and an assist and Brian Jordan had a goal and an assist for Mitchell (2-8, 1-2).
