Chestnut Hill, Mass. — Boston College's AJ Dillon, a true freshman running back from New London, became the first player in school history to be named Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year on Tuesday.

Dillon, who was also named the ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year, received 47 votes from a select panel for 45 media members and the conference's 14 head coaches. Wake Forest's Greg Dortch was second in both categories with six votes.

Dillon has rushed for 1,432 yards, the second-highest total by any freshman in ACC history, and ranks second among all freshmen nationally this season in rushing and 15th among all players. He already holds the Boston College freshman rushing record heading into the Eagles' bowl game and is tied for sixth on the school's single-season rushing chart.

"It is a true honor to be the first Boston College player to win this award," Dillon said in a release. "All the credit belongs to my teammates and coaches for helping me to be in this position. We have a special bond here at BC and I can't wait to close out the season in a bowl game."

On Monday, Dillon was named first team All-ACC and tied with Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, for most votes among the all-conference teams. Dillon was the first true freshman running back to be named first-team All-ACC since T.A. McLendon of North Carolina State in 2002. He was also the first BC true freshman to collect first-team All-ACC accolades since linebacker Luke Kuechly in 2009.

He is just the second freshman in ACC history with two 200-yard games.

Dillon has been at his best as the Eagles (7-5) have rolled off five wins in their final six games. During the last six games, Dillon has rushed for 1,099 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging 183.2 yards per game.

Boston College will play in its fourth bowl game in five years under head coach Steve Addazio. The official announcement of the bowl game and opponent will be Sunday.
