Sun host Mystics in home opener Saturday night

The Connecticut Sun are finally whole after veteran Camille Little joined the team in San Antonio having finished her season in Italy.

Now first-year head coach Curt Miller has to figure out how to carve up the minutes between the 12 players.

The process continues Saturday as Connecticut plays its home opener against the Washington Mystics (7 p.m., Mohegan Sun Arena) after completing a two-game, eight-day road trip that was extended an extra day because of travel days caused by inclement weather in Texas.

The Sun (1-1) won their first game on Thursday, 72-68, over the San Antonio Stars. All 12 players played, unusual for a team not involved in a blowout.

"I said after the (WNBA) draft that one of the toughest things would be trying to figure out playing time for everyone that deserved it," Miller said. "Some of that will take care of itself based on matchups, and I'm excited about our post depth. We can play different ways with different lineups depending on matchups. We have flexibility to play different ways.

"We don't have much guard depth because most teams carry seven and we carry six, so foul trouble is more of a concern. ... I don't think you can play a 12-player rotation in this league, but do think you can consistently play a rotation of nine."

Little, who started all 34 games at power forward last season, played 25 minutes and scored a team-high 13 points with six rebounds. She was required to play more minutes because Chiney Ogwumike fouled out in just 14 minutes.

"It's good to get Camille back into the fold because she made some huge plays and leadership plays, but she only has three practices under her belt," Miller said. "We had to keep the playbook very simple, but because of that, we didn't have many turnovers."

Connecticut played with more poise Thursday than it did in their season-opener at Chicago. It had an awful first half and never recovered in a 93-70 loss to the Sky.

Thursday's game was tied at 59 with over five minutes left when Jasmine Thomas, Little and Alyssa Thomas sparked a 6-0 run. The Sun never trailed again.

The Sun had hoped to use the schedule to its advantage as Washington played at home Friday night against the Los Angeles Sparks, losing 97-67. Poor weather caused their flight out of San Antonio to be delayed and it missed its connecting flight. They stayed an extra night in San Antonio, left their hotel at 5 a.m., Friday, flew into Newark (N.J.) and arrived back home close to 3 p.m.

Connecticut didn't practice and instead watched tape.

Washington (0-3) is banged up. Star point guard Ivory Latta (right knee surgery) and forward Ally Mallot (right arm muscle strain) are expected to miss at least another week, while forward Tierra Ruffin-Pratt (sprained ankle) missed the first two games before returning Friday night. Post LaToya Sanders is trying out for the Turkish national team in hopes to play in the Olympics.

"Despite their start, they've been very impressive on film and will certainly be the best defensive team that we've played this early in the season," Miller said of the Mystics.
