The Connecticut Sun may be the WNBA’s most star-crossed franchise because they’ve had more injuries to key players over the last 12 seasons than most teams.

The WNBA season is over five months away and already Connecticut may be without its best player, post Chiney Ogwumike. She underwent successful Achilles surgery Wednesday on her left tendon at Houston Methodist Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. The timetable for recovery from such a procedure is typically six to nine months.

Ogwumike, the 2014 Rookie of the Year, missed the entire 2015 season while recovering from micro-fracture surgery on her right knee.

“Battle scars come with the territory,” Ogwumike said in a release. “I firmly believe that every disappointment is a blessing because the person that emerges is stronger than before.”

Connecticut brought Ogwumike along slowly to start last season as she worked her way back into the form that made her a 2014 All-Star as a rookie. She started in 18 of 33 games and was the Sun’s second-leading scorer (12.6) and led them in rebounds (6.7).

Ogwumike finished last season strong with 17 straight double-figure scoring games — tied for the fourth-longest such streak in team history. She averaged 16.9 points and 9.2 rebounds with seven 20-point games and eight double-doubles during that span. She was also named the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year.

“Chiney continues to be an inspiration to me with her positive attitude and a champion’s mentality,” said Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller. “She will look at the bright side of this latest set back and see an opportunity to become an even better player, person and teammate. Her determination to attack any obstacle is impressive.”

Ogwumike was playing in China and was the first round MVP of the WCBA. She averaged 33.6 points and 12.4 rebounds for Henan Yichuan.
