Sun open 2018 WNBA season at home against Las Vegas

The Connecticut Sun will open the 2018 WNBA regular season at home, and then spend most of the next seven weeks on the road.

Connecticut will play host to the Las Vegas Aces (formerly the San Antonio Stars) at at Mohegan Sun Arena on May 20 at 1 p.m. It’ll spend most of the first half of the season on the road, which it did last season, as 13 of its next 18 games are away.

The WNBA condensed its schedule this season because of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain (Sept. 22-30).

“We are playing 34 regular season games in nearly 25 less calendar days than 2017, so it makes for extremely tough stretches of games and travel,” Connecticut general manager and head coach Curt Miller said, “but the positive news about the early road games is we finish with 11 of our last 15 at home, including four straight to finish the regular season.”

All teams play four games against one opponent and three against the other 10 teams. Connecticut and the Washington Mystics will play one another four times.

The Sun will host Maya Moore, Lindsay Whalen and the world champion Minnesota Lynx on June 9 and Aug. 17. The runner-up Los Angeles Sparks visit on May 24 and Aug. 19, the latter being the end of the regular season.

Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury play at Connecticut on July 13. Sue Bird, Brianna Stewart and the Seattle Storm head to Mohegan Sun Arena on July 20.
