Mystic Recognizes National Cancer Survivors Day

Sunday, Jun. 2, 2013, 10:00 am

Community

Downtown Mystic, Cottrell St., Mystic, CT

Foxwoods Resort Casino and The Day have joined forces in support of the Downtown Mystic Merchants to host a special event on Sunday, June 2 in recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day.
National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual, treasured celebration of life that is held in hundreds of communities nationwide and around the world.
Participating stores will feature a poster depicting a photo of a cancer survivor as a way to celebrate their life and to share their inspiration.
“We want to honor those loved ones who have valiantly battled cancer and won,” said Dale Wolbrink, Foxwoods, manager of public relations. “This is the perfect way to celebrate survivorship and share their stories with others for inspiration and hope.”
Also on Sunday, June 2, cancer survivors or their loved ones are invited to drop off a seashell at any participating location in historic downtown Mystic. All the shells -- symbolic of Mystic's nautical connection and protective nature of the Mystic community -- will be collected, then crafted into a beautiful piece of artwork by local artist Angel Beth Smith, also of Mystic.

The finished artwork will then be auctioned at the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival with proceeds of the sale going to support the L&M Cancer Center, currently under construction in Waterford.

Local residents are asked to submit a photo of themselves or a loved one to be posted in the charming store fronts of downtown Mystic on June 2. Photos can be emailed to photos@foxwoods.com or via post to Dale Wolbrink, Foxwoods Resort Casino, PO Box 3777, Mashantucket, CT 06338-3777.

Photo must be at least 3” x 5”. Digital photos must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Acceptable file formats are jpeg and pdf. The deadline for submitting hard copy photos is Tuesday, May 28. Digital photos will be accepted until Thursday, May 30.

Acceptance of photos will be done on a first-come, first serve basis. The number of individuals to be honored will be dependent on participation.

A list of participating stores is available at mystictoday.com and mysticchamber.org.

6th Annual Big Red Motorcycle Poker Run;

Misc. Events

Stash's Cafe, 95 Pequot Avenue, New London, CT , 06320

The Big Red Memorial Fund is hosting the sixth annual Big Red Memorial Motorcycle Poker Run. Registration will begin at 10 am at Stash’s Café in New London and includes breakfast. The registration fee is $20 for rider and $30 for rider and passenger. Non motorcyclists are welcome too. Upon registration each participant will receive a poker form then go to each of the five participating bars and draw a card to add to their poker hand. The five participating bars are Stash’s in New London, Hooties in Pawcatuck, Smokey O’Grady’s in East Lyme, Brown Derby in Montville and Christopher’s’ in Groton. All participants are asked to convene at Christopher’s Café in Groton at 4:00 for a barbeque, raffles, poker prizes and live music by Mind, Body & Soul.
All proceeds will benefit the Big Red Memorial Fund to help disadvantaged children of New London County play in organized sports.
This event is in memory of Cory “Big Red” Milton who was killed instantly in a car accident nearly six years ago at the young age of 19. He had just graduated from Fitch High School in Groton and was attending Baran’s Institute of Technology’s motorcycle technician program.
During his time at Fitch, Cory’s proudest achievement was to be a member of their football team for 4 years. Cory was 6 feet 3 inches tall and 300 pounds with bright red hair; he was often called a gentle giant but best known as “Big Red”. His build made him an ideal lineman, but he often held some reservation about hurting his opponent. He truly was a gentle giant. In youth football, he’d tell his mother and father, “I don’t want to hurt anyone. I am so much bigger than they are.”

Being a member of the Fitch High School football team was an honor for Cory. When he put that uniform on, he would swell with pride to be a part of such a celebrated and respected team. Cory wasn’t a star athlete. He was just thrilled to be there and play when he got the opportunity.

Cory loved all sports and during his childhood years in Groton he played baseball, basketball, golf, football, ice hockey and participated in track and field events. Again, in each case, he loved to be part of the team and participate in the sport.

With this, his parents and brother; Gary, Kelly, and Ryan Milton, have set up the Big Red Memorial Fund with proceeds benefiting children who cannot afford to play youth sports. This fund is used for registration, equipment, and other costs associated with youth athletic team sports for children in New London County. Since 2007 the Fund has helped children participate in baseball, softball, basketball, swimming, fencing, track, football, cheerleading and soccer.

The Fund has additionally helped Groton Mystic Youth Football, New London Youth Football, New London Babe Ruth, Groton Babe Ruth, Groton Youth Soccer, Fitch High School Football, Fitch High School Fencing, Fitch High School Track, Ledyard Football, Groton Parks Recreation, and Waterford Basketball. The Big Red Fund has also helped send a few children to cheerleading camp and soccer camp.

This event coincides with what would have been Cory Milton’s 25th birthday. Please join the Big Red Memorial Motorcycle Run on June 2nd to celebrate Cory’s life and make a donation to a charity that will help as many children as possible participate in sports programs that they may not have been able to afford otherwise.
