Electric Eve Fun Run

Sunday, Sep. 15, 2013, 11:00 am

Misquamicut State Beach , Atlantic Avenue, Westerly, RI

The Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce will present Electric Eve, a 5k non-competitive fun run on Friday June 27, 2014 at 9 pm at Misquamicut State Beach. Runners, artists and revelers will unite for a special evening of LED light and music. Activities such as children’s amusements, a Flashion Show contest, and a food/beer garden will open at 7pm. Face painters will be on hand to paint with reflective paints so runners faces light up when they go under the black lights. Race starts promptly at 9pm.
The 5k (3.1 mile) megawatt course will incorporate adrenaline pumping music and special effects. The dazzling light designs will be designed by local artists and creative business owners. Participants will experience a pulsating, kaleidoscope of light and sound at Misquamicut Beach. As part of the entry, runners will acquire a glow-in-the-dark t-shirt and admittance to the post-race party. Many participants will wear silly costumes, neon tu-tus and wigs and blinking sunglasses.
Several themed areas of the course will be designed to engage participants. Strobes, lasers, and glowing signs and other special effects will create a colorful setting. “Atlantic Avenue in Westerly will be transformed into Electric Avenue for one amazing technicolor night.,” said chamber Executive Director Lisa Konicki.
The event culminates with a high voltage after-party, where DJ Don Dada spins tunes and a laser lights how takes place as part of the dance party. Grey Sail Brewery will host a beer tent.
Registration is available now at ElectriceveRI.com and the prices vary depending upon age, date of registration, etc. All proceeds support local Chamber programs. Such as free Big Screen Movies on the Beach, Santa’s Arrival, Riverglow and more. More than 40 volunteers are needed and they may register on line. Those who wish to attend the event and after party but not race, may pay $10 admission.(401) 596-7761

Land and Sea:;

Art Exhibits/Openings

Studio 33 Art and Frame Gallery, 140 Bank Street, New London, CT , 06320

The show featuring work by local artists Lizbeth McGee and Susan B. Stafford will run from Sept 4-30. There will be a meet&greet with the artists on Sept 15 from 1-3.

Liz has been involved in creating for years. Her life journey is a lot like painting. “The best quality about this medium,” says Liz, “is its ability to surprise. And that is its truest parallel to life. The greatest test is learning how to make something beautiful out of it.” Liz captures the area’s soul in her soft, wispy watercolors.

Susan has also been involved in art for years. Moving with her naval officer husband she traveled around, before settling back in the area to their satisfaction. Teaching art and exhibiting locally Susan strives to capture the heart of the area that captures visitors and locals alike.

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum Presents Kitty Wales: Lionfish;

Art Exhibits/Openings

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street, New London, CT , 06320

Fascinated by the anatomy and movement of living creatures, Kitty Wales creates sculpture and installation art based on her direct observations of animals. She has traveled to the Scottish Hebrides to study wild goats, the Spanish Pyrenees to observe bearded vultures, and the Caribbean to document reef sharks in their underwater habitat. As part of a collaboration between the Lyman Allyn Art Museum and the Mystic Aquarium, Wales visited the Aquarium to observe their collection of marine life, taking photographs and preparing sketches that would later fuel her creations in the studio. Inspired by the textural, feathery forms of the lionfish, Wales then set to work envisioning a site-specific installation intended for the Lyman Allyn. Three larger-than-life lionfish sculptures constructed of welded steel, heavy paper, and recycled pencils will transform the gallery into a “deep-sea” environment for visitors of all ages.

Crossing the Connecticut River Exhibit;

Art Exhibits/Openings

Connecticut River Museum, 67 Main Street, Essex, CT , 06426

Can you get there from here? This old saying really means something when you consider getting across the mighty Connecticut without the bridges we have today! There are approximately 58 vehicle bridges currently spanning the Connecticut River and ten were chosen as representative examples for the Connecticut River Museum's 2013 exhibit 'Crossing the Connecticut: Bridges of the Connecticut River'. The exhibit features several different styles of bridge design and explores how people's ideas of what bridges should look like and how they reflect how their communities have changed over time. The exhibit features many objects and images from the Museum's collections as well as paintings, original toll signs, documents and other artifacts on loan from other institutions. Through October 20.

Some vendors at The General Stanton Inn Fleamarket in Charlestown believe they can tell when it's high tide at the local beaches(the "old-timey" way):when the waves of visitors shopping at the fleamarket suddenly retreat. Those same vendors suggest that at high tide this weekend(12:16 p.m. on Saturday,13th and 1:05 p.m. on Sunday,14th),it will be a good time to come to the Fleamarket and avoid the "sea of shoppers" that tend to flee the beaches and gather at the Fleamarket during the lower tide times (and lower wave times)of day.The General Stanton Inn, one of the oldest,largest and most popular outdoor fleamarkets in the area,is open Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays until Columbus Day.
