Camp Harkness, , Waterford, CT
The Arc New London County and the Cactus Jack Foundation will host the 36th annual Jack OKeefe Memorial Strides Road Race at Camp Harkness in Waterford on Sunday.
There will be a 5K, 10K, and family fun run, walk and roll.
This fundraiser, open to all ages and abilities, features cash prizes for top male and female finishers in 5K and 10K races, and free T-shirts for the first 500 racers. For children, there will be a free bounce house, balloon artist, face painting, cotton candy and more. Outback Steakhouse, title sponsor since 2004, will provide food for registered participants.
All proceeds benefit The Arc New London Countys Community Life & Advocacy program, which supports full inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities by teaching advocacy skills ranging from speaking up for transportation rights to preventing sexual abuse and domestic violence.
The Strides Road Race is a tribute to Jack OKeefe Sr., the first recreation director at the former Seaside Regional Center and organizer of the inaugural race in 1978. The race also pays homage to the late George Daly who was Camp Harkness director from 1976-97.
