The Lyman Allyn Art Museum Presents Kitty Wales: Lionfish;

Art Exhibits/Openings

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street, New London, CT , 06320

Fascinated by the anatomy and movement of living creatures, Kitty Wales creates sculpture and installation art based on her direct observations of animals. She has traveled to the Scottish Hebrides to study wild goats, the Spanish Pyrenees to observe bearded vultures, and the Caribbean to document reef sharks in their underwater habitat. As part of a collaboration between the Lyman Allyn Art Museum and the Mystic Aquarium, Wales visited the Aquarium to observe their collection of marine life, taking photographs and preparing sketches that would later fuel her creations in the studio. Inspired by the textural, feathery forms of the lionfish, Wales then set to work envisioning a site-specific installation intended for the Lyman Allyn. Three larger-than-life lionfish sculptures constructed of welded steel, heavy paper, and recycled pencils will transform the gallery into a “deep-sea” environment for visitors of all ages.

4 outstanding Artists:
Copie of New Jersey, born in 1962 of Dominican parents in Washington Heights, New York City is a realistic mixed media painter who describes his work this way. "The source for the majority of my concepts, originate by simply walking around in the streets, riding public transportation and observing. I use photography and sketching for reference, then document it on canvas/wood panel, with my own perspective".

Lisa Lim of New York City, a talented young illustrator as well as a writer and cartoonist, grew up listening to magical storytellers like her Chinese grandmother and her Puerto Rican stepmother. She was immersed in many cultures and has tried to capture this unique experience through odd and funny pictures and words. Her fiction and art have appeared in several publications and just finished illustrating a children’s book called “Soma So Strange” written by Carrie Rosten.

Irene Miller of Woodbridge, CT is a mixed media artist. She describes her visually beautiful work as “influenced by Post Minimalism and Neo-Geo and focuses on the geometry of circles, rectangles, squares and stripes as conceptual structure to a series of individual ideas. Layering forms relationships, and mark-making can detail patterns that are experiential in life.”

Brad Guarino, of New London, CT is Painter whose figurative work focuses in on male images and cultural stereotypes of what that means. Through a collage/painting process he “references how boys form their concept of male roles—by piecing together the perceived characteristics of cultural icons and stereotypes with those of influential men in their lives.
