Backyard Monsters: The World of Insects
Get a bug’s-eye view of some backyard insects in the Mashantucket Gallery’s newest exhibit. Giant robotic insects, up to 96 times their normal size with lifelike colors and movements, dominate the exhibition. Hands-on displays let you take a mechanical insect for a walk, build a bug, and learn how insects communicate. Free with Museum admission, free to Museum members. Join us along with Connecticut State Troop F, Westbrook on Sunday March 30 from 8am-12pm at the Haddam Firehouse for a Pancake Breakfast made by some of Connecticut's Finest to benefit the Healthy Communities-Healthy Kids Coalition of Haddam and Killingworth. Donations are $10 for adults and $5 for Kids and Seniors. All donations benefit the coalition.
The mission of the Healthy Communities-Healthy Kids Coalition is to engage every sector of the community in an effort to change policy, educate, and implement strategies to prevent and reduce substance abuse, other risky behavior, and to promote the wellness of the community.

The Mystic Area Ecumenical Council will sponsor the 2014 Choir Festival Concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at Union Baptist Church, 119 High St., Mystic. Children’s and youth singers from ten area churches will combine in this annual festival worship service.
This year’s festival director will be ASCAP award-winning composer, conductor and clinician Mark Patterson of Midlothian, Va. He will be accompanied by Michael G. Noonan of North Stonington along with guest musicians.
Mark Patterson, a nationally acclaimed composer, conductor and teacher, will direct this year’s festival. He is the director of music at Salisbury Presbyterian Church in Midlothian, Va., where he leads a comprehensive music program for adults, youth and children. Dr. Patterson’s compositions comprise a rich variety of styles for the sanctuary and the concert hall. Currently he has over 300 choral works in print as well as a solo piano collection, various musicals and choral compilations, and several volumes of vocal solos. In addition, Patterson has been a consistent winner of the ASCAP Award in Composition for over ten years.
Patterson will lead a free workshop for choir directors and music teachers at 7 p.m. Saturday at Union Baptist.

Join Chris Cryder of Save the Sound, Kate Brown of the Trust for Public Land and the Old Saybrook Land Trust for a special program about the 1,000 Acre Preserve. Learn about this amazing coastal forest and why it should be saved through stories, pictures and video. Cryder has logged more than 1,000 hours hiking in the Preserve, and has a vast knowledge of the flora, fauna and history of the forest. Brown is the Project Manager for the Trust for Public Land’s and will discuss efforts underway to permanently protect the forest.
