Kelle Groom reading from her work

Sunday, Apr. 13, 2014, 5:00 pm

Author Events

Stonington Free Library, 20 High Street, Stonington, , 06378

One of the most acclaimed literary memoirs of recent years is “I Wore the Ocean in the Shape of a Girl” by renowned poet Kelle Groom. It’s a gorgeously written and heart-wrenching book in which the author searches for self-forgiveness against a backdrop of alcoholism, the experience and aftermath of a brutal gang rape, and the loss of her son Tommy — whom she’d given up to an aunt and uncle after he was born — to infant leukemia.
That Groom has survived and is sober is evident in the glory of her prose and poetry, the latter of which includes the collections “Five Kingdoms,” “Luckily” and “Underwater City.” Her writing is clearly the hard-earned result of her experiences and the idea of therapy-through-craft — but that Groom is singularly gifted is also true.
Her work has appeared in Best American Poetry 2010, The New Yorker, New York Times, Ploughshares, Poetry and The Writer’s Almanac. Groom is a recipient of a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
She’s also the James Merrill House Writer-in-Residence for this Spring 2014, and she will read from her work Sunday at the Stonington Library.

For Adam's Sake;

Education/Lectures

The Bill Library, 718 Colonel Ledyard Highway, Ledyard, CT , 06339

Ledyard Historical Society program presented by author Allegra di Bonaventura about her book "For Adam's Sake: A Family Saga in Colonial New England" - in researching the early settlers of the area, the Winthrops, Livingstons, Rogers and Hempsteads, she has gone beyond the diaries, land records and other earlier published histories used by other historians and examined court records, to present a new perspective of these families. "This is an extraordinary story about ordinary people in a pre-revolutionary New England family. Among the people are a master and his slave, the only account of such psychological depth I have seen in all the family histories of New England. Impeccably researched, elegantly written, it is a model of its kind." - Joseph Ellis
